brought oat at the preliminary trial
on Monday are aa follows :-The
Scott Act was carried in the county
on Thursday, Oot. 80, 1884, by a
majority of about 1,600. While the
ballot -boxes were awaiting the ofileial
count they Wore stored in one of the
m

ich. under look and key, A young
man named litoPherecn, a tailor, was
approached. by a number of persone,
among them James Bailey, and asked
to steal some of the boxes before the-
offioial count could be made. Mo -
Pherson, who was fond of the flowing
bowl, was williug, and was promised,
$10 by Bailey, and a much larger --...,
sum by a syndioate of liquor meu.
McPherson had been ou a steady
-
drunk from las day of the election
(Thursday) until the day after the
steal, yet he had sufficient sense to•
know how to compass the boxes.
About three o'clock on Mouthy, the -
2nd of November, McPherson, hav-
ing been provided by Bailey with a
hatchet and a large screwdrtver,broko
in a large pane of glass in the window
of the room where the ballots were
stored, and stole three boxes. He
brought the booty to Bailey s hotel,,
and he and Bailey afterwards hut
them underneath the barn. All that
MoPherson got for his work was $8
from Bailey, and bewming alarmed
he fled the day after the eteal to Chi.
cage. He wrote for More money, but
received no more cash. Believing
the treatment he had received from
his companion in crime was not
square, and his parents desiring his
return to Groderioh, and the • Toronto
detective having completed hia chain
of eeidenoe, i. was easy to persuade
the lad to return to Canada aud thake
A clean breast of the whole affair. On
Saturday night Bailey was arrested
and brought before the mayor ,for his
