Sklta,Oraatting --Rev. Da. Hunter. of Harnittaa, it 'Serious- ly ill with gamey. . Dr. II, F. Campbell, of Cleveland, quNGER IN THE AIR. has explained to the Harct'd, 01 that In the chilling winds, the damp atmosphere city, how he attired the life of Mr. awl soddenly ehecke4l prespiratiou, colds are Frawley. ha brakeman ou the Lake lurking, Ilegyarcl'a Pectoral Relearn curoa, Shore and Michigan Southern Road. colds t a•)ghe. asthma and bronchhia, and all Frawley was burned so badly by the ca explosion of an alt car at Angola, N. Y„ last March, that the skirt of his back, of both legs, and of both thighs was destroyed to the extent of 390 square inches. Tho afflicted surface was so large, especially on the left limb that if allowed to hoot without skin -grafting,. the muscles would con- tract and cripple the patient for life in all probahiifty. Before performing the operation of grafting new skin the surgeon carefully prepared the wountls by cutting out all the burned parts and dend skin. Thirty days from the time of the accident tho wounds woro healed Sufficiently to allow the application of 4 bits of skin ranging in size from a Pin- head to half n grain of wheat. Tho bits were hold fast by gutta-percha tis- sue,, a substance like mucilage and which was covered with a dressing of gauze .and absorbent cotton. This dressing was changed every day. In three days the grafted skin took root and extended rapidly from bit to bit. `~ At first the new skiu was pink, but changed to the color . of natural cuti- cle. Tho bits were taken from healthy parts of the pationt'd body, and four, five or six other persons. To obtain the bits the skin was lifted with forceps and cut oft with scissors• This .pro- cess is far more painful to .the heroic 'person operated upon than is the oper- ation of grafting to the patient. rho grafting is an easy process, but great care must be exercised in dressing the parts. The grafted skin is not so elas- tic as the. natural growth, because the cellular. tissue has been burned away, but ono is just as good as the other for all practical purposes. The surgeon found the' ...rider part of a gond, healthy corn wool. `produce skin growth of a normal character. Dr. Campbell said skin -grafting was first practiced in this country in 1871, ,and it is mare, com- mon then ever now. Some surgeons press the bite ruder the granules, but equal results will bo obtained, in his experience, by merely laying the bits between the granules on'the surface; Bits; .of skin from a.
