:gooT'r Act.—Rare, as elsewhere,
thti question of the day is "Scott Act.”
T1 -,o most labored arguments are made
pro and con. Some virulence and
abuse is being indulged in, but not
nitwit. From present iu.dioations, the
probabilities are, that Stephen will
poli a cousidereble majority against
the Act. It is beoomiug recognized
that it is not a question of temperance
or intemperance, but toe question is,
"Ie the Act au effectual remedy for
what intemperance does exist.'' Every
person acknowledges that a grave in.
justice will bo done to the. licensed
vioivallerd by the passage of the Act.
Probably the best and truest system
of temperance would be. to do away
wholly with strong drinks,. succi as
whiskey, brandy and giu,aud cheapen
and popularize light- and non -intox-
icating 'drink,, such as lager beet. A
law is of no veins if. not parried out,
and the social customs of a people for
generations °dunot be instantlyohang.
ed by any arbitary or oppressive Aol.
People, who from childhood have eon
eidered it right and proper and pleas-
ant to drink a,glass of lager alone or
without a friend, cannot see why such
a harmless proceeding• oan be wrong
and illegal, at the dictates of any set
?of men. Nobody denies the evil of
I intemperance, but the personal liberty
to eat, drink cud wear what we like
is a prerogrative dear to the hearts of
alt Britains and Germans too. There
is certainly a great acid sacred prin-
i ciple invelyed here, that will bear a
great deal of pondering.
