London, after an absence of, four
weeks,

visiting her sister in Mitchell re-
turned home on Sunday.

the week end at the home .of Mrs.
N. W. Woods On his return on Mon-

The Guild of -Trinity Church held rt
salad tea in the bank room last Fri-
day; The room was prettily,' decorated
and a very nice tea was served. The
proeeeds amounted to $11.
- The Agricultural Society held its
annual masquerade and dance, on
Wednesday evening of last week. The
hall was filled to capacity, about 50
were masked for, the -occasion and
presented a brightly coloured
throng. for the grand march, which
was directed by .Carl Houston, There
were brides and grooms, old-fashion-
ed women, natives of different coun-
tries, and a goodly variety of pirates
and gypsies, Spaniards and evert
Micky and Minnie Mouse were pre-
sent. The hall was decorated in fes-
tive colours, and the -music was sup-
plied by the Bayfield orchestra. A
fine lunch was served. The judges for
the costumes were. Miss Jessie Met-
calf and Mies Morley of Detroit; and
Mr. Jas. A. Cameron of Toronto.
Amongst the prize winners were:

Obituary
GEORGE HEWITT
- A highly respected -Citizen of LTode-
rich Township, died on Tuesday when
George Hewitt passed away at his
ome. TWough afflicted by brindnesq,
Mr. Hewitt was remarkable for his
kihdly disoosition, and his friendship
was sought and treasured.
He is survived by Mrs. Hewitt,
three daughters, -Mrs. Wm. McAllis-
ter, of Detroit; Mrs. Patterson, of
'Port Huron; and Mrs,. Harry Lang -
with her daughter, and therefore will
t be.-ahle-to-returryfor her-frt
funeral. which takes place to Malt-
e-metery-this- afternoon. Mr.
Frank liewitt of.L_Watford- is a -son.
GUY BLACKALL
Bothwell, April 18. -Guy Blackrrfl
prominent sportsman and Mason, of
Bothwell, died yesterday in St. -
Joseph's Hospital?, Chatham, follow-
ing an operation. He was in his 48th
year..
Throughout Western Ontario, Mr.
Blackall Was known for his sporting
activities. He was in early life, a well
known hockey and baseball player
and Utterly had been a referee _tan
'both these sports.
;Porn in Clinton, he was a son of
the late Dr. J. E. Blackall and Chris-
tina Kennedy Blacken. He received
his educatioon in Clinton and Hen.sall
schools. For 30 years he had lived.in
Bothwell, and for sone time operated
a gangs there.
In 1909 he married Miss Mary Le.
Beau, who survives. Mrs. Austin
Hahn, Baker street, London and Glen
Blacken, Becher Street, London, are.
sistet and brother. The funeral with
Masonic honors, took place at Both-
well, on Sunday, and was largely at-
tended by, friends and relatives from -
all narts of the province.

The sudden death of E. Van Amain
Lesslie, manager of the Bank of
Montreal, in Broekvilie, for the past
seven years, occurred last Thursday
morning, at his residence. He suf-
fered from a heart attack.
Born in Kingston, Mr. Lesslie was
a son of the late Captain William B.
Lesslie, a widely known mariner, and
his wife, Who, before her marriage
was Miss Lauri Marion Brea. The
latter survives In his early life the
late Mr. Lesslie WAS an enthusiastic
attdete, particularly in rowing,
hockey and rugby football. He en-
tered the service of. the Bank of
Montreal, -forty-two years ago, ard
early in his banking career WAS Sta.
tioned in Brockville, when the late
W. R. Trailers was manager. He rap.
idly advanced in successive 'positions

MRS:RICHARD SMITH
BAYFIELD, April 22. -Mrs. Mar-
garet Smith of Bayfield died in the
Goderich Hospital Tuesday, April 21.
Mrs.' Smith had been in poor health
since Christmas, and on the 17th of i
April she was removed to the Gede-
rich hospital, where She later sin-
-cumbed. er -
death was caused by a tumor on her
ram
Mrs. Smith was the daughter of
IVIargaret Brown and James Lindsay.
da was bort on -1VIay T7, 1867, on
the Brownson line, in Stanley town-
ship, later she moved to Goderich
township while,still a child. She was
married to Richard Smith, who died
in. 19n.
Since Mr. Smith's death, Mrs.
Smith took over his work as mail
carrier, and has faithfully driven
mail for the last four years. During
this time she has faced many
Atorms andmuch disagreeable
weather, cheerfully, for she was of
a most kindly and cheerful nature,
and performed her duties with care
and consideration.
The funeral will take place from
her late residence on the Saubte
line, on Thursday. afternoon, and
will be conducted by Rev. R. M.
Gale. , The. pall bearers will be Jack
Caineron, Hugh McKay,Harold
Stinson, Percy Weston, Herbert Mc-
Gregor, and Walter Westlake. ,
Those surviving Mrs; Smith, are
one sister, We. Wm. Higgins two
brothers, George and *Jack Iindeay
and two sons, James of Hullett
township, and Lindsay at home.
Mrs. Smith will be missed by the
community, and by her many
friends.
