Proctor was the scene of a happy . event
on Monday night, Sept. 2*rd, when Mrs.
Proctor's. mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Brooks
« Qlinton, celebrated. her 79th birthday.
. Brooks, whose maiden .name was.
liza'betit Stirling, was born on the 4th
t oz1cession of Ooderieh Township and
w the sec*nd eldest of a family of
nine, born to David Stirling and his
:,�- wife, Elizabeth Coutts. In .her youth she
'was united in marriage with Thomas
Harrison, and for number of yearsthey
farmed on . the 4th concession of Gode-
rich Township on the farm now owned
by. Mr. George Hopson. To this union
was born eleven children, ten of whom
are still living. •
Mr. Harrison died as the result of an
accident in the hayfield 25 years ago,
after which the subject of this sketch
married Mr. Charles Breoks, of New Lis-
keard, where she resided until the death
_ of her husband almost six years ago,
after which she took up her residence in
Clinton. ' On Monday night eight of her
children were present for a family din-
ner at which Mrs. 'Brooks presided at
the head of the table, which was centred
with the large birthday cake and decor-
ated with lovely bouquets of autumn
flowers. After dinner the following ad-
dress was read by Mrs. Lorne Thurlow-
of Sheppardton :

Mr. James Harrison, of IKirkton, Mrs.
Brook's eldest son, presented her with a
handsome walnut mantel clock, which 1

During the evening a number of games
and contests were enjoyed for which
prizes were given. Plans were made to
celebrate the 100th anniversary ' of • the
arrival of the ITarrison family to this
country, -tlie celebration to take place in
Harbor Park, Goderich, next year.
Mrs. Brooks is the happy grandmother
of 28 grandchildren and four great
grandchildren. •

Guests were present from Toronto,
Sheppardton, Goderich, Bayfield, Sea-
forth, Kirkton and Exeter. The house
was beautifully .decorated with borfquets
'of' flowers. Two ' telegrams and messages
of congratulations were received, also a
handsome cheque from her . eldest
daughter in the State of Washington.

afternoon at the home of Mrs. Chats,
Crawford with 16 present. The W.M.S.
_ meeting Was held first with the presi-
dent, Mrs. James McKenzie, in the
chair. The ineetipg opened with a
hymn, follewed by a prayer by Mrs.
Pomeroy. 'Mrs. Lednor read the scrip-
ture. After the devotional and business
part of the meeting was concluded, the
guest speaker of the afternoon, Miss
Minnie Dickson, gave a very interesting
address on her work as nurse m 'the
Hearst Hospital. The Ladies' Aid presi-
dent, Mrs. Bert Johnston, was in charge
of the L. A. gathering. It was arranged
to hold a social evening on October lath
at the home of Rev. and Mrs. Pomeroy,
Rally Day Service
Rally Day service was held in the
United church on Sunday afternoon. An
encouraging address was given by_ -the
pastor, Mr. Pomeroy, on "Success or
Failure in the Sunday School." The
essentials for success which he empha-
sized in his address were. "Interest,
faith; enthusiasm and the willingness to
'lift.' " The road to 'failure was "loaf-
ing," "indifference," "fault-finding" and
evasion. "Which will you follow, the
road to success or failure?" Marjorie
McKenzie gave an interesting paper on
"No dark or lonely corner in God's

Court on Thursday afternoon. Mr.
Dudley Holmes, Huron's Crown At-
torney, occupied a seat on the right

rings, from Mrs. Nora Maloney, -was
seemingly drawing to a close what a
team of horses, a revolver; a gun,
and. -some wearing- apparel were in-
terjected into the proceedings by the
lady. Mr. Holmes promptly asked
for, and got a remand of a week. •In
the meantime, thematterwill be fur-
