family are moving in with Mrs. B. Pat-

The g.J:ls' judging in the Hodsehold
Science Campetition held at London Ex-
hibition were Miss. Eleanor Wilson and
Miss Ruth Straughan. The girls were•
succepful in winning the first prize with -
their 'demonstration, "Cotton May Be
Smart." 'I hey also won praes , amount-
ing to the suns of $15.
Miss Rtith Straughan received - word
that -she won first prize in judging -the
dress parade at Toronto and received a
substantial cash prize.
Mr. and Mrs. C. Ml11e, Shirley, Joan

Thanksgiving for the recent beuntiful
.harvest was offered • in the Anglican
Church here on Sunday when Rev. L. V.
Poco:k gave the morning address and
Rev. A. C. Calder of Goderich, conduct-
ed the evening ,service: Both clergymen
referred to the bounteousness of the
harvest and the goodness of God to those
',that put their trust in , Him. Solos
were rendered by Miss Margaret Fergu-
son and Miss Josephine Weir. It was
In 1880 the first Anglican church was
started, in tint locality when the ser-
vices Were conducted in No. 3 school.

were not available for the immediate

Union church celebeates its Golden
Jubilee in October, and special fea-
ture have beeis planned to observe
its 60th birthday.
On Sunday, owing to the -Memor-
ial service at Maitland cemetery, the
service at Union was withdrawn. The
pastor, Rev. F. W. Craik conducted
Sunday School, before going to the
cemetery.
Next Sunday, the regular service
will be held at Union, when the pas-
tor's subject Will be, "What Is My
Task?" Special music in keeping
with the text will be rendered.
Mr. and Mrs. Julius Lowe, Mrs.
Lawrence Lowe of Detroit' visited at
Mr. and Mrs. Robt. McAllister's,
Goderich Township, Sept. 17.-In-
spector*E. C. Beacom paid an official
visit to Union School last Wednes-
day.
Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Horton of Lee-
ltprn visited on Sunday at the home
of the latter'esparents, Mr. and Mrs.
Geo. Falconer.
Silo filling commenced last Satur-
day in this community.
The regular meeting of the Y. P.
S. of Union church, was held,on Fri-
day evening in the church, with 14
members present, and Mrs. G. Har-
wood in charge. The meeting opened
with the hymn, 'For the Beauty of
the Earth% followed with the Lord's
prayer in unison. The scripture les-
son, Psalm 65 was read by Doug.
McNeill. A prayer from the "Path-
finder" was read by Herb. Johnston.
The topic on "Through Nature to
Gad" was read by Everett McIlwain.
Several items of. business were dis-„
cussed. The hymn, "The Heavens. De-
clare the Glory Lord", was sung .and
the Miessah Benediction repeated.•

Porter's Hill, Sept. 19. -Mr. and
Mrs. Orville Rogert recently married,
have taken up reeidence on the 6th
eoncession; and Mr. and Mrs. Robert
Rogers, have moved to their farm on
the Huron Road. It has been much
improved and decorated. It is hoped
both these couples may live to enjoy
a happy future in their new homes.

daughter, who wal, returning to her

last week at Nile with her cousin, Mrs.
Thos. McPhee.
Mrs, -John -Taylor passed away last
Saturday morning at the home of her
daughter, Mrs. J. Connel. The sym-
pathy of s their large circle of friends is
extended to Mrs. COnnel.
The Young People's Society, held their
meeting . on. .Friday.s evening under the
leadership of Carl Finnigan. The scrip-
ture lsson was read by Helen McPhee
,before Mr. Poineeces gave a talk on
study groups' which might be carried on
in the community. It was decided that
beginning next 'Friday, a half hour be-
- fore the regular meeting would be spent
in study and discussion of a book, to be
chosen .by Mr: Pomeroy. Arrangements
were also made for a contest to be car-
ried on in the society. The members
were divided into four groups which are
to take charge of the four meetings dur-
ing the month of .0etober. The group
putting on the best evening's entertain-
ment is to be entertained by the others.

Suffered Stroke' While on Visit.
Funeral From Home of Her
Son at Nile

-Dungannon, Sept. 17. - In the
death of Mrs. John TaYlor, which oc
curred on Friday, at the home of her
daughter, Mrs. John Connell, Galt
the township of West Wawanosh los
an old and highly esteemed citizen.
The deceased, who was Miss Mar-
garet Johnston, was one a a family
of nine sons and daughters of the
late Agnes Malwain and was born
• nearly 83 years ago in the township
of Ashfield. Upon her marriage to
John Taylor, she went to reside in
West Wawanoshswhere_she had been
a continuous resident. .Some seven
years ago she suffered a 'paralytic
etroke, but recovered to a certain ex-
tent. About two weeks ag_o she went
to Gat tto be with her deughter.,
Mrs. Connell, and it was while there
she suffered another stroke and
pasted -away.
The ° remains were brought to the
hone of her sont Mrs Ross_ Taylor,
east -Of Nile, where she had made her
home. She was predeceased some
12 years by her /01gband. Surviving
are her son, Rosd Taylor, and
her daughter; Mrs. Connell, Galt. She
is survived also by one sister, Mrs.
Richard Cousins, nette Sheppardton,
and four ,brothers, Samuel, David,
Wilbur and James Johnston all of
Ashfield. '
The funeral was held on Tuesday
afternoon from the home, and was
attended by a large concourse: The
services at house and graveside were
conducted by Rev. • Mr. Pomeroy,
pastor of the Nile-Leeburn-Port Ale
bort United church circuit. Inter-
ment was in Dungannon cemetery.
The casket was surrounded with
many beautiful fibre tributes, ex-
pressive of silent sympathy for mem-
bers of the bereaved family and af-
fectionate regard for the deceased.
The pall -bearer e were Messrs.
Purdy, Johnston, D. Johnston, J.
Johnston, A. McIlwain and Jas. El-
liott.
Among those in attendance -sat the
Western Pair this week were Mrs. C. C.
Brown, Albert Brown, Mr. and Mrs. Wil-
bur Brown, Thomas Rivett, Mrs. Charles

Mr. David Glenn is a patient this
week in the Alexandra Marine and
General Hospital, Goderich, where, on
Wednesday, he utiderwent in operation
for the removal of a cataract from his
eye. For the past Month he has been
almost blind, as there is 'One developing
on the other eye.
Miss Elizabeth Ivers had the misfor-
tune of falling on the sidewalk and
breaking her right arm above the wrist.'•

Clinton, Sept. 18-A large number
of Clinton friends gathered on Mons
day night at a delightful farewell
surprise party in honor of Mrs. I4es-
lie Hanly, prior to her departure fer
Toronto, 2where she will make her
future home. The guests made the
occasion doubly enjoyable by com-
ing in costumes, for which prizes
were Awarded. The winners were,
Mrs, L. Hanly and Miss Sadie Lovett.
The evening was spent playing
bridge and the refreshments were
served in an attractive way. Mrs.
Hanly will be missed' very much in
this communiti, and she is followed
to her new home by the good wishes
of a host of friends.

After the ceremony rec.eption was
held at the home of the bride's parents,
and a wedding dinner was, served, the
house being decorated wtth --pink and
white streamers and early autumn flow-
ers. The bride, who was popular in
church and social circles, received many
beautiful and valuable gifts, among
them being- several substantial cheques,
also a handsome clont from the congre-
gation of Hackett's church, of which she
had been organist. The bridegroom's
gift to the bride was a gold wrist watch,
to the groomsman and ushers, initial tie
pins, to the fleiver-girls bracelets, Mr.
.and Mrs. Mathers left later by motor for
a trip. through Northern Ontario, Ont.,
and, on theie return, will reside on the
bridegroom's farm east of Lucknow.
