way, who is holidaying this month, the
morning services in Ashfield Presbyter -

In the evening the ;congregation : had the
privilege of hearing an. inspiring sermon
from Rev. D. T. 1VIoZerroU, moderator
of the General Assembly.
On Monday, Mr. and Mrs. Wan! John-
son, Sr., Celebrated their' golden wedding.
About fifty guests were invited to their
home on tli:e,. BlueWater highway. for .a
fowl. supper. In the evening:! a large
number of their friends assembled to
wish them many happy retUrns, and. to
present them with a purse of money as
a token of their esteem.

The W. M: S. held their meeting in
the church 'last. Wednesday afternoon
with Mrs. Watson presiding. The 'roll
call was answered with a verse of scrip-
ture. A temperas e- reading was given
by Mrs. John McPhee, and a very inter-
esting talk on her work among the In-
dians was given by Miss 'Currie of Mun- •
sey.- --Miss. BerniceCassidy--also sang -a-
vocal solo. • ,
The 'Young People's Society met Iast
1'3riday evening, Wilmer' Rutledge taking
charge of the devotional part of - the
;fleeting. Miss Eileen Feagan conduct-
ed the Bible discussion and: Miss Hilda
Finnigan gave a topic on "Frevention
Rather Than Cure." Miss Velma Finni-
gan sang a solo which was much enjoy-
ed. Plans for the Young People's church
service on Sept: 8 were dismissed, and a
pulpit lamp was , selected, • to be purchas-
ed immediately. Rev. Mr. McGookin, of
Oxbow, Sask., was present and greeted
the society on behalf of the one from
which he- comes in Saskatchewan. Af-
ter the close of the meeting a few games
were played.
Mr. Fred Murney is helping Mr. Dick
Reed with his harvest.
-Mr. and -Mrs. Carter, of Toronto, are
staying at the home of Mrs. Carter's
farther, Mr. Dick Reed.
Mr. and Mrs. Brodie have ,been visit-
ing at Flint, Mich., for the past `week.

20 present and Mrs, A, E, Errington
in the chair. The Boll Call, wasan-
swered by an account of a miracle. •
Mrs. McBride told of the conditions
'and lessons to be learned from mira-
cles. During a social hour the hos-
tess assisted by 'her sister, Mrs.
Young, served lunch. -
T•here was an attendance of 26 at
the W. M. S. meeting at the home of
Mrs. John A. Walter's on the ?th
inst., Miss Clark, the president, pre-
sided. Mrs. Walter and Mrs. Morris
assisted the leader with the opening
exercises. The roll was answered by
a verse about "Courage". The chap-
ter from the • Study Book was taken
by Mrs. T. H. Wilson. The guest
speaker was Mrs. Grierson, returned
missionary. Mrs. A, Grierson visited
this -congregation 20 --years ago- before
going' to Korea, when as Miss Mary
Fingland, she went out under the
W. M. S. and 'was supported by the
Auburn Presbyterian congregation.

churches that had • been established
but. there --is- sti-ll a=great-ded-of -tern-
ritory where there are no workers
and foreign.' missionaries wild be
needed for many years. to come.
Pe:' Geo. Wylie occupied his own
pulpit •on Sabbath and took for his
text, "And He shall be called Great",
explaining the wbrld estimate of
greatness and what Christ said of it.
There will be no service in the Uni-
ted. Church- jrext- Sunday, as - Mx,
Wylie will be away on holidays.

LADIES TOOK DITCH --
INSTEAD OF TRIP

A party of Hanover young ladies met
with an unfortunate start on what was
to be a holiday trip when their' car
struck loose gravel near ' Flesherton and
upset. The party comprised Miss Mar-
guerite Lines of 'Toronto and the Misses
Marie Lines, Clara nuneman and- Frhlen
&haus of town, •and they were on their
way last Saturday to spend a week or
two in the Muskoka district. A lot of
loose gravel had been placed on -Highway
No. 4 between Durham and Flesherton
and when the car hit this loose gravel
the driver -lost control and the vehicle
turned over thrice before coming • to a
stop. All of the girls were badly shaken
up and sustained numerous cuts and
bruises, but none of a very serious
nature.

a Man and his wife' in difficulty just
about 100 feet from the shore. The
water was very rough, they (had gone
beyond. their depth And as they were
holding on to each other both were in
danger of drowning. , Mr. Blowel_ and
