General .
The serious crop conditions which
were developing east of the Rocky
MOT."'" owing .to unusually dry
weather -accompanied by a heat wave
have been changed for ,the better so
far as the Prairie Provinces are con-
cerned. by _ heavy.rains over most of
the 'Western Plains during `the past
few • days. These rains have allevi-
ated -deterioration from drought, heat
and high winds and have checked
grasshopper inroads improving the
general situation which was becom-

tions of the "three provinces. 'In, Que-
bec warm weather andrainare badly
needed to 'promote growth. As a
'wh'ole spring operations have been
carried out under favorable condi-
tions and in- general the acreage
planted is larger than -was the case
last year.

Much 'speculation is rife regarding
the probable effect .of "the new. ' beer
and wine regulations on 'the liquor
situation in Huron county and parti-
kularly in Goderich.
Owing to the uncertainty, at least
three ,county hotels have applied for
licenses- 1'but none of them have re-
ceived any reply us'yet from Toron-
to. Hotelkeepers in Goderich, Clin-
ton
linton and Bayfield have sent in their
/applications.
In the meantime itis .said that beer
is being sold in various 'places in the
county ' quite openly, the assumption
apparently being that even if a regu-
lar license cannot be secured, no one
is likely to be too strict owing to the°
