WILV'(4I1i''lG•, Sept. 27. -®' Winter
seems tb have already arrived here.
After a :cool and cloudy • summer
people v; ere hoping for a nice . fall, ,
but so far it is anything but that.
Tempertatureo for'+' the past . four
days are ranging o rona '20. tc 40,
with rain and new flurries pre-,
vailing and )snare: ,forecast. The
reeeovd . crap is taking 'a beating,
' with considerable damage. from ek-
cess rain and lowering of grades.

Inv last article, had some repercus-
sions which I will explain later.
My next important race wasn't so
successful. There was . an 4m-
ericaa aider working in S.eafortl}
who • was • said tohave quite a
reputation, 'so a 'mile match race
as arranged between, hint and, me
in Goderich At . a small local . even,.
ing meet:. Still riding a somewhat
heavy and low -geared bike, I was
considerably handicapped, as my
opponent was niaunted on a light
slick -racing wheel. with higher gear.
I was. paced., by •a tandem which I
lay -in behind, while my opponent
lay in. behind 'me. Before' II ex-
pected" it he sprinted and was
caught more or less fiat -footed. I
started to pass -the tandem, and the.
tandem boys at that moment st'a'rted
to get out Of the way. Unfortun-
ately 1 was held back somewhat
in- this process. By that time •my
opponent had quite a lewd that I
didn't make up. Undoubtedly a
good rider,-. but a -.poor sport.-

(:However, that. fall, without any
particular preparation, • I estab-

7 hours 21 m;uutes and 'was held. .
by Dr. Robertson' of Stratford, "At
that time one wasn't riding on nice.
Paved,, or hard -surface roads like
those of today; plenty 'of uew •
gravel, ruts, dust, etc., to contend
with:, 1: could have bettered this,
time •considerably •withMore train-
ing and a better organized try.
But I cieelded to wait until some-
body broke my record. I 'ant, still
waiting. With ' present-day im-
proved roads, improved bicycles,
etc., 1 believe about 5 hours would
be comparable to my 5 hours • 55
minutes of ''0`f. - One big regret I have 'had for
that year was my passing up two
big events, namely, the RQT 'in•
Toronto' and the Hilsendagen - '.in
Detroit. The RQ'r was a twenty-
mile road• race and the Detroit race.
was Nventy'-five• miles around Belle
Isle. But, at that time, lacking
experience and .up-to-date • training
methods,• I just lacked the nerve to
enter these events with their

The morning ,pf the 24th was a

Somewhat nervous and dubious
