In fact, .you Can go -anywhere in..Ilol-
iand-now -by army bus. '. .
(Later.). Have just finished supper
affer,'a.eturuing from an all -day trip
that has been . most interesting. I
left the club about 10• this Morning and
part way by bus and part by boat ar-
rived ' at an island called.- ',Marken,"
-Where the ,Holland 'peopl'e` live as they
did many' years' ago .j.ust for the sake
of tradition and 1 .think what they
can got out Of the tourists.. I would
call it a very hard and lonely life, but
with a• lot , of colpi', and you : could
not help but fall in loge - with the
children. On the island the people
are all Protestant.
First we went' into .one of their:
fomes, Where the lady of the house,
speaking English, explained. everything
to us. _•
Then the dress. There' is only 'one
wedding' dress for each family, made
in adjustable size -and -handed . down
from one . generation to, .the `next: It
is made full withrplenty of color, and
has `many things on it, such as . seven
flowers representing the Bible number
seven. - ' A girl' cannot be married until
she can make her own clothes and do
many house`hold.duties and cannot even,
look for x bdy friend until . , she is
eighteen. '"The •boys must be able to
curve their own• wooden. `shoes, includ-••
ing a fancy and often_p. very • pretty
pattern on theran ..as well.
With the children it' is impossible
to tell a. boy from a girl. They are
dressed lust alike and .the, -boys. wear
.their hair down to.' their shoulders.'
When the boy reaches the -age of nine
.lie is permitted to wear -pants. When
he 'is some older his hair is 'cut, until
one day he is•'at last turned out as a
man should be. • •. 4,
There are only seven families ,on the
island, - and one hundred and forty
persons; / so you can .see ' the inter-
marriage is prolific. .Anyone who
,marries one off the island must leave
their. happy (?) home for the mainland.
Thepeople are all f'mshernen and there
are boats by -the hundreds.
• 'Liring - Conditions '
The .houses on the island are . very
much alike. There is , a small - hall
just off the front door. Through this
you - enter the living -room and I' do
mean living -room, They .not only live
there ' and eat but also 'sleep there.
There is one double bed that is built
into .the wall. At any rate you • can
only 'fall out - one side. If there is a
baby in .the family that little individual
.sleeps in a: cradle. built into the wall
at the foot .of the. main• bed- and at just
a height where one could sit up in
.bed and attend to it. I hes, the: child
Is too .big. for this he is placed in a
second bed built under the; first bed
and stays there, I `suppose, until 'it is
just ',plain, decent to move. When he
does tinaliy move, it is upstairs - rte,
as' fax as I .could see,. an ordinary bed
in the sane room. -in which• the fish nets
are mended. • If there should be two
children,. »one- 'a girl and one a boy,
1 don't know . what happens and „ I •
didn't like to .ask, but It looks to me
as though it would make no difference
whatever. There is also a small store
room and a kitchen. -The Wall of the
living -room is just covered with pic-
tures and plates from top to bottom.
Then 1 . ca.me back to the mainland .
to a place called Volendam. Here the
people . were Catholics and - although
most of the people - lived' in' the old
traditional`. way, there Were a• great
many' modern - folk, among them. I
liked this place even. better than'
Marken and the only big difference •1
could see ivas in the dress; which was
inclined' to be. plain, and the : men
dressed much better. At Marken'they
wore a• sort of knicker, white here they,
wore a very roomy but straight
trousers'a.nd coat all in black. Women
wore. a white h',at on, Sundays and a
black one. tb work in.
While.:w.riting' some notes in a book
1 heard a- laugh behind me and a voice
reading off what 1'wds writing. -, Turn-
ing around 1 saw a very good-looking
brown -eyed boy who looked about
twelve but said he ` was seventeen: I
thought a person who could read my
buyer, 'we will give you the 'ceiling
price.. •

At Amsterdam
(Later)—One• nioRning, I want for a
boat ride around.'the canals of Amster-
dam and over the harbor. I saw:mest
of the city, for this piece.A a labyrinth
of canals. A lot of the homes are
very old... ---1n- fact, some ••of the--hquses
leaned against one another as if they
were tired of standing alone. 1 for
one would not want to live in one, -
I saw the house in wliirh Rembrandt
lived and the first English ships to
tonne into Amsterdam unloading, 'also, a
Dutch ship, the first one.to come home
since•the war started. 'Of ,ourse there
was a lot of damage, but it is fast
being. cleaned up. Was through the
Dutch East Indies museum and it was
very interesting. Also the National
Art Galleries, and' saw - many , of the°
original ,Rembrandt pictures. I went
more .to see • what .0 good painting
looked like .than anything else. Rem-
brandt went in for "medical pictures a
lot. 11e 'painted one of a group of
men working... over a. dead -'body and,
boys, that preparation room smell came
right back to me.
In the afternoon went to see Maiden
Castle. It. is a' very old place, but in
perfeet condition and the best yet
I hatTe seen for giving you an idea.
