acted as chairman, for the ga,thering
and on behalf 4f tife Township Council
extended a welcome. He commended
the 'spirit of unity .and patriotism
ledged vvith thanks the help given in
the beautification° Of the cemetery and
bespeke continued interest in the work.
3. Norman Kernighan of Goderich,
a well-known na.tiVe of the township,
expressed pleasure in being asked to
join with the people of Colborne' in
honoring the memory of their ancestors
and of depaxted friends. II,e- could
hot claim to be one of the early settlers,
he said, but hp, Was the son of one who
had settled in "the township ninety
years' ago, and -,ha his lifetime he had
been intimately acquainidd with four.
generations of Colborne people -s"--- 'A
"pioneer" he defined as one who goes
before to' remove obstacles and prepare
the way for others. The early settlers
removed obstacles of . 4erekt,718elation,
hardships, poverty ; /kit everyone can
be' a pioneer in his own sphere, even,
if iti,be in a 'small way, in 'removing
obstacles and laindrances in the lives of
others.. The - Apeakea.. deplored the
rather general deprediation in rural
life. sTaking One school section as an
example, ,he said there'.were now only
one-third-aS-many homes as there were
,in earlier days. 'The number. of
churches in the -township also' had de -
'creased; 'The early ' settlers were
mainly men Of pharaeter, whose word
was as igood as their 'bond; who were
always ready to extend a hel,ping hand
to their fellow -Settlers, mid who took
pride in ImProving their,surroundings.
'There was room at the present time,
said the sipeaker, for improveraent in
many ',directions -4n home and farm
:buildings, In ,eommunity life generally,
in the nultivation of music, handicraft
and other arts, in 'public speaking and
de•veloping :an aetive interest in
.affairs. Mr. Kernighan paid
tribute to tale men who had' made
•sacrifiees in war - In order -that this
,ebuntry luad. the world might have
peace. It would be the duty of all to
help preserve that-peaee, lv endeavor-
ing to understand' the prolblems 'and
aSpirations of other peoples and by

of the first ,eentury. He spoke of ,the
stedfastness of the early settlers as an
,entouragement to the present gener-
ation to' faee the problems and difficub.

northwest breakwater; the Sea Cadets
put on their regatta In Goderieh harbor
on Saturday afternoon.
The iet 'and stormy weather was
disappeinting', and prevented a large
attendanee of Spvtittorh. By .3 o'clock,
however, 'the sun was Shining.- '
Participating ,in the regatta, were
cadets film ,the crews of th-e various
corps who had trained during the
"Repulse," of Sarnia, the "Adtniral
Beatty," of 'St. Thomas, the "Royal
Oak," of' Stratford, and the "Cour-
ageous," a London. The Lo.ndon corps
had been in , camp -only week and
pitted their skill against the suntanned,
youths of the_previous camps:
The eight -oar crews manning the
cutters bad a difficult task but managed
their craft with the skill of mow sea-
soned seamen. In the first race the
Sarnia Cadets outdistanced the LOU -
don crew by a smell ruargin. There
was keen eompetftiofr also when the
crews from St. Thomas and Stratford
raced. Halfway* down the course the
latter -gained speeti,,,mad_passed the. St.
Thomas cutter, finishing first. In the
final raft' between the Stratford and
Sarnia Crews, the Sarnia boys; crossed
the finishing -line at the mouth of the
harbor -only three-quarters of, a boat -
length, approximately' twelve feet,
ahead of the Stratford cutter. The
time was 3 rainutes 47 seconds for the
half -mile course.
