lic has heard, charges that Canadian
training planes and war planes have
been broken up wastefully for scrap,
and it Is a sure thing that there will
be plenty more loose'talk of this tYpe,
for loose. talk it is. And it, is based
largely Ott misinformation.
,The fact is that., disposing of old
and even new 1-wartnanes' no longer
needed is one of the biggest headaches
facing Allied authorities all., over the
vvorld,• and though many will try to
make political capital out of It there
just isn't anything political involved.
In wartime planes are' built regard-
less of initial cost or operating 'cost for
two major purposes -bombing and
fighting. The fighters are“built to ItY
is fast and dangerously(to the 'enemy)
as possible, with no regard to the ter-
• filic power (and the terrific eoat
providing it) necesSary to defeat the
enemy.
By the time the war is. over, all but
the oewest fighting planes are out of
date, and even the newest are rapidly
outmoded: These fighters have abso-
lutely nb-eonitnereial us'e; They carry
no pay load, and they cost a small
fortune"for ever Y hour they are 0 kept
in. the air. Repairs and iMehltentime
are. out of reach. The parts are Use-
less for other purposes. • The metal 11:4
worth only a few' dollars. They are
literally a pile of serap.
. Bombers are. if anything just bigger
piles of scrap. Again the costa of
gasoline, maintenance, repairs, etc.,
Would make 'them So expensive- to Oper-
ate that they would bankrupt any
',commercial airline or operator.
•' top of that, bombers" would need
extensive conversion, far •more eon-
Nersion than would be needed' In pre -
faring\ an army transport plane for
conameielal use.
