The ; re'vLYal ai4 the Caderte1l Board.
o£ Trade is' a step that should have
good iesuitse..• -There ' has been .solve
fear that Goderich' . wait neglecting op-
portunities of business adyancennent
and was ,allewing other runieipalities
to forge' ahead of this torp. by greater•
"alertness' and effort. Tile reorganized.
Board• is an indicaa.tien that, it this
fear was well founded, ;something la
to be done 'to remove : it and, to use
- a hackneyed expression, to "keep.
Goderich on the nnap,"
. It'' is to be hoped, and expected, that
the new org.nuization will so conduct
itself as to win and keep the confidence
of, the people of Godereieh generally.
In the past -two or three decades 'the
Board of. Trade has .had so many
periodsof suspended animation that
it may" take' some little time to realize
that it is a real..terce in the business
life of the town. 'This is a handicap
that. ••must be removed, by solid and
sustained effort, .It is fortunate that
a man, of the standing of Mr. R. M:
Menzies .has consented to assume. tire
presidency of the Board. Mr: Menzies.
has responsibilities to hula own business
that he cannot neglect, and thebusi-
ness people of the town, and the towns=
-people generally; should rally around
him and his 'associates in the, Board in
their .efforts to provide' .' 1 medium
through which the .commercial and in-
dustrial, aspirationsof the to'n may
have practical and useful ' expression. -
vas -SERVICE TOTE
'The ballots cat. by, the members
of the armed services in. the Federal
election have been eounted and have
had surprisingly little effectupon the
`results as ',tentatively decided by the
civilian vote, Liberals are given 35
percent. of the soldier vote, the C.C.F.
gets 32 per cent., the Progressive Con-
servatives 26 per cent., and other
parties seven per cent.
The results in four • ridings are
changed: by the servie& vote. Liberals
apparently win two seats from the
Conservatives and lose" one to the
Conservatives and one to the C.C.F.
The maji rities in some constituencies'
are very _close and ; thiie may be a few
changes yet one way or another, •
The most spectacular ;change is the
defeat by: a narrow margin of .Prime
Minister King in Prince AlbeSr-t; 'gask.
Mr. King . had been unable to; spend
more than a few days among his con-
stituents since the election of 1940, and
this, with the swing to the C.C.F. in
the -Province of Saskatchewan,' resulted
in his losing the seat to a member of,
that party, .'He will no doubt . be
offered^•a safe seat elsewhere, probably
in one of the Eastern Provinces.
