Reach Montreal after Release from a
. Prison Camp in West Africa
MONTREAL, Sept. 10. -Six Surviv-
ors of the Canadian Vessel Portadoc,
toitsedoed by a Nazi U-boat earlier this
year, arrived .here today after their
release from a French prison camp in
West Afica.
All Montreakrs, the men were
George Morris, Fred Jones, Thomas
Levelly' Robert 3,1u.nra, Larry La-
chaPelle and 'Marcel Lalonde. The
ship's first officer, 'George Rewe, of
Morftreal, returned earlier this week
and. reported that the only casualty
am -Ong the crew of 22, aWis, Elliott, of
Port -Colborne, /Oat., died of fever and
neglect. • • '
The. snen arriving today said they
were released from internment when
.the French, doctors threatened to io
on strike because hospital facilities were,
oVererowded and only inadequate At-
tention could be giventhe sick.
After their release they Made •theie
way through six railes of jungle to
reach British te'rritoky. • -
The crewmen had a good Word for
the French physicians. "They did
what they were allowed to do for us
and it was through their threets that
„we were released and eent through the

jungle . to British territery," Lalonde
geld.
.The .men also commended the Ger-
man, submarine commander, whom they
described as the "only white Man. We
saw down there." Jones and Lachapelle
Were on a raft after the terpe-doing
and the submarine picked them up and
transferred Them to a lifeboat. The,
commander also gave them supplies.
They landed on Vichy French ter-
ritory after- four days in •a lifeboat
and were 'housed in native grass huts.
