origin of the drum has over been traced
by some patient iliquirer. We have
been told that it ontne1 to ns from the
Ea`et,that the P,Ioora first brought it in
to Europe. Certain is the filet that, tlie
most savage race have always rejoiced
in their t'tlntutns, and as the tleasnre
of making a noise is inherent in human
nature, perhaps this most effeotiee way
'of creating a alio was invented by
?l.dam's 80)18 or graudenus. But the
drum does not appear to have been need
in the French army nntil towards the
elose of the f •urteenth century, and its
introduotien is attributed to the Eng-
lish 'inveeion under Edward IIi ; its
genoral adoption by the infantry elates
back to the time of Louie Xt.,wbeu the
.Swiss element was largely infused into
the Royal forces. The drum at this
epoch was t.'shapeleas instrnntent and
served mare for rallying, the troops or
for the conveyance of the word of com-
mand than foe regulating the step.
whish wart f,tr from being as measured
as now. Each captain had a,9rummer
in 13114 private livery, and he employed
shim to Carey his order or instructions
'las much as for `boating ;the word of
command ; the drummer in these days
appears to have been a kind of aide -do -
camp. The covering was ltsnally made
from the hide of some anirnat-gener-
ly of an ass—though i1 it he true tint
John Ziaoa, the aven•'er of Hillis, be•
queened his skin to his gallant corn•
panions in arms for form the covering
of a drum which was to summon them
in case of danger, material more noble
as at lea't once made to serve the
purpose. The drum was not need for
•drilling infantry to keep step until the
'middle of the eighteenth century, and
the roll snob as we know now it was
only regulated some hundred years ago.
The drummer's art then became more
'diffionit, and to perfect it regimental
schools were eltabl:shed, the mates
of which was drum -major, who in re
'gent times was such a prominent and
popular personage in each French regi-
ment. The period of his greatest glory
was the First Empire, when the drum -
major of the Grenadiers of the Guard
had rank as a oait'ain and wore a uni-
form which cost Napoleon £120. Un-
der the Re ttoration and the Monarchy
of Jnty, dram.majors were given to the
teginxeuts of fireman, and even those of
the National Guards, but of late years
their prestige has diminished in a great
'extent, and also their stature ; they
'are no longer such imposing clothes-
horses, all lace and feathers, towering
above ordinary mortals ; the race has
in flet been visibly deteriorating.
Bush as they are, however, they will
disappear from the head of French
regiments with their drums.

.. After the ceremony, the happy couple,
amid the congratulations of their
friends, left with the intention of driv-
itog to St. Thomas, there to take the
train for a wedding' tour. Bat this
was not destined" to be, for, whe.aonly
about two miles on their journey, the
horse gave a sudden stint, throwing
both of the oocupauts out of the vhe-
isle. Mr, Taunton, Wile was himself
severely injured, at once went to his
wife's assistance, and had her removed
