Uesar.—On Thursdttf evetiing Ur., Hebert
Webster was driving north at a furious pace
in a baggy which contained, besides himsel',
two lads. At the market square the bnggy
titheelstruck a nuutber of logs in the ditch, when
Webster was thr,nwn out, striking the ground
with considerable violence, and knocking him
sentelees. One of the boys opting from the
buggy. The other one succeeded in stopping
the horse and drove back to where Waster
was lying. He was picked up and after being
revived by cold water, was placed in the buggy
and driven home. It was fortunate for him
that lie was not injured fatally. It should
be a lesson. to people who gallop their horses
in buggies.
A Goon Inti.—On Friday last, Messrs D.
Johns and Geo. Mace circulated a petition for
signatures requesting the Exeter Cloned! at
its meeting to pass a by -lay prohibiting anws
from runuing at Largs between the hours of 8
in the evening and 7 hi the morning. The pe-
tition was very largely signed, and no doubt
the by -lay will be passed accordingly, as it
should be. The cows do a large amount of mis-
chief during the night, w11en their depre•
dations cannot be inter`erecl with, and
the only way to prevent it is to.shut them
up. Some people cry out that the poor mnu
will suffer by tho more, but they will also gain.
for it is generally the poor man who has Lis
garden destroyed. At all events, it is not
much of a hardship to require that the sows
shall not be allowed their liberty on the streets
between the hours mentioned.

WW1= KNowIxo.—There is a little fad
worth -knowing to those who have plum trees,
and that is that already the "Curculios" are
at, work. If proof is wanted, wrap a piece of
woolen cloth around the stem of the tree in
blossom, just below the limbs, and examine it
every morning before the sun gets very strong.
Tile little pests will be fount. in more or less
quantities in eloth or between it and the tree.
A great tunny may be destroyer) this way, but
perhaps not sufficient to save' the plums un-
less "j ,mine the tree is also reported to.
This should be done as early as the young
plume are seen to bo forming, certainly cannot
be done too early after the blossom is seen to
be falling. It is alt the better of being do -e
early in the morning, bat seven or eight o'clock
will do fairly well, and great numbers can be
destroyed. The evening again, after sundo,vn
is a good time. Spread a large Niece of white
cotton below rhe tree and hit it a quick jar in
such a way; as not to injure the bark, and the
insects will tall on the sheet and may easily be
picked up and destroyed. Every man who
has plum trees owesit to his neighbor to do
what he Can to do away with this most de-
structive pest.
