Philips, PrOprietor ' , Auctioneer .1 •• Interesting Money Case, Exeter School Report The Advertiser and Free Press of last week had a, lengthy itena 'regard. UI g an alleged attempt of George Hew- ell, a, Sovereign Bemis -clerk. of aesetal', to get poseession' of $0000 which he claims that, his grandfather, George Hewell of 1114dforel, gave lima, told 'which' he claims he can prove. The case seems to be sadly mixed up hot the truth of the matter seems to he something like this; Howell gave Powell'a check on the Sovereign Bank Thedforcl for $9000 at the same time giving him a little talk on the careful use of money. The latter brought the cheque to Exeter and denpsited it in his own name. When the cheque went to Medford the bank manager asked Howell if it were correct that he had Signed this cheque and el4n the grandson the money. The answer WaS in the affirmative. Later on for some reason Howell made out 0. draft for be money but Powell refused topay, belieying tbat the gift was genuine and saying that he would see the dia gentleman first.. In the meantime Major Judd of London is employed to bring suit for the rooneY. A. tempor- ary inkteictioU was granted restrain- ing the bank from paying Oyer the motley and on Thursday at Toronto the injunction was continued to Onto 8th, The young man, Powell, says that the grandfather naade hins a- present, of the money, but that sobsequent in - finance has been brought to bear on him (Howell) ny,gthers interested. Be also says that eAna pow if Howell said it was not a girr-the money would be returned.Mr. Judd in his story' told at ToroutO says that "one Sunbury, a solicitor: of Exeter, had taken Oa plaintiff to a hotel in Exeter and had got him to sign a paper, the eoetents of which be did not know." Ur. Stan - bury to us on Monday said that this was not so, but that be had seen How- ell in a tante' at Thedford in connection with the business but the only paper the old gentleman bad si igned n his presence was one retaining Mr. Me.
