'There is no me is talking , nothing
on earth will ever knduwe rue to give my
consent.'
It was my mother who spoke,, and I
sat silent,; vainly endeavoring to find
some argument which. should induce
Ler to change her mind., IJuless she
did so, the case, I knew was hopeless;
for Helen, proud,, beautiful darliug that
she was, would, never marry a man
whose family refused to sanction the
snatch, '' My mother was the best wo.
man in the world,. too good for the
world, I, sometimes thought -too good,
at least, for the world in which I lived,
stud to which I had recently;tranaplant-
ed her from the quiet New England
village in wbieh elle had lived all her
married life, If you know anything of
the rigid spirit which prevails in those
quiet spots in New England where a
'stern Puritanism rides rough -shod over
all natural tastes and instincts, yon
can, perhaps, appeolate the force of my
mother's objections tomy betrothed,
Helen Leighton ; otherwise, you must
take my word for their cogeucy.
'She dunces; she gambles; she laughs
in church.'
These were the grounds on which my
mother's objections were based. I had
argued them with her, point by point,
many a time, driving her from thein
one by one. forcing her to acknowledge
their untenability. So far so good
but as a bit of whalebone springs bao
when the pressure upon it is relaxed
just so surely did her mind spring back
to the original point.
'She gambles she dances ; she
laughs In' church.'
Dance ? Of course sbe danced, like
a wave of tbe sea or a bubble of the
air. Thanks to my Puritanical train-
ing, I had no opportunity of learning
the art mita muscles had lost their
youthful flexibility. Nevertheress,it
was my delight to watch her graceful
Ague and to catch the bright glances
which from time to time she sent me ite
'she past.
Gamb:e ? She played cards,as every-
body does, which hardly constitutes
gambling ; but this was a distinction
which my mother would by no Insane
allow.
'Cards are cards,' was her line of ar.
gement. 'It may be a shade worse to
play for money, but in either case the
principle is the same.'
As fcr her laughing in church, who
would not have laughed, under the
circumstances,, I should like to know
You see, her brother, Harry Leighton,
was gifted with naturalist's tastes and
instincts. Bugs and 'beetles, worms
larva), andall hideouo flying and creep-
ing things, were to him types of beanty,•
in its divinest essence. Now, on that
soft August afternoon, as Helen and
Harry were crossing one of our city
parks ou their way to church, his eye
fell upon a specimen of the rare Dorcas
brats, which, by tome miraculous
means, had strayed thither. How was
it Possible for him to resist capturing
such a,priae ? As he had come out
unprovidediwith the oolleotor's supply
of boxes, murderous drugs, entomolog.
cal pins, and such like, an empty rn
volepe, served to confine it, and he
it iato his pocket. Unluckily,
the envelope was not sealed ; the beet-

Now I had again and again explain-
ed the oiroumstanoes to my mother, but
it was all in vain,
'If Aho had had a proper sense of the
solemnity of the place, she never would
have been tempted to laugh,' ` was all
that she would say, adding, as her u!.
tiniatum.'If ever you find me gambling,
danoiug, and laughing in church, I
will give my consent ; but, until then,
it quite useless to ask me.'
And so saying, my mother terminat-
ed the argument by sweeping from the
room, leaving me to chew the cud of
sweet and bitter reflections. How my
my mother's objections were to be an-
swered, I confess that I oduld not see ; ;
that ebe would never change her mind

down the aisles, with sexton and Sun-
day -school children in full cry after
them, bats might flan and clergymen

With a sigh I gave up the problem
at last, sallied forth all unconscious
that fate was working for me in a case
where I 'was utterly Helpless.
II.
It had rained for a week—a driving,
easterly storm, with ocoassional inter-
ludes of heavy, foggy weather, low grey
skys, and damp, raw air. My mother's
chest being weak, she was debarred
from all out -door exercise during its
continuance, and, sooth to say, ,the
time began to hangheavily on her hands.
Reading is all very well for a time, but
when you have all your life been a
bustling notable housekeeper, finding
your highest pleatnre iu new and re
oondite receipes, in scrupulous and fre-
quent aleansiiigs and purifyings of your
domicile from cellar to garret, your lit-
erary tastes are apt to rust. In a city
boarding-house there is little out -let for
energy ir. any housewifely direction.
Therefore it was no wonder that my
mother soon began to stray about the
parlors with a forlorn and !topless ex.
pression, wistfully watching the various
groups, each deep in the myste• ins of
Cassino, Sancho Pedro, or such like un
wholesome divereion;for cards just then
happened to be a mania with a 1 of
us.
Suddenly, as I watched her oti that
especial evening, I saw her whole face
light up as she paused beside a group
of four who were collected around a
small stand. Naturally I strained my
eyes and ears to learn what eeu'd hay
prcdhood that look of plaid and pro

The others, with, I fueled, a slight
hesitancy, began to instruct her in the
awn of the game. Soon 1 heard term
flying freely—terms curiously fawilar,
but strange and uncanny, as proceeding
from my mother's lips,

tones of wild excitement; but—

'Twenty-five,' replies my mother,
blandly and unsuspiciously,

mind, turd looking around the table,
she gasps, faintly.
'What—trim have I been playing ?'
Amidst a shout of laughter the an-
swer reaches her, brokenly, faintly,but,
alas 1 only too intelligibly ;
'Playing 2 Why, 'penny ante,' to be
sure. The cards were all in use, so we
have been playing poker with dominoes
by way of variety.'
I must pass lightly over the tableau
which followed, or my talo will be too
long ; over my mother's apologies, re-
morse, tearful explanations ; over her
indignant refusal of the money ; her
final acceptance of it under protest, aud
ite subsequent dedicatoin to the cause
of missions. All this 1 must leave to
your imagination, and pass to the next
scene.
