They are made of the best steel, and by the best workmen in Eugland, and have a national reputation for certain desirable qualities which no other pens seem to have at- tained in so great perfection, among whieh aro uniform evenness of point, durability, flexibil- ity, and quill action. It is thus quite natural that the Spencurian should be preferred and need by professional penmen, in business col- leges, oouuting rooms, Government offices, public schools, and largely throughout the country. Indeed, so popular have they be- come, that of the " Nntuber One " alone, as many as eight millions are sold annually in the United States. The Spetceriau Pens.tnay be had, as a rule, from any dealer ; but when not thus obtainable, the agents, Messrs. Alex. Buntin & Co., 345 St. Paul street, Montrca:, will send for trial samples of each of the twenty ntnnbers on receipt of twenty cents. Os Trtt Wan -Peen. -Detective Smith, havb>g been unable to fi,,d any persons in this vicin- ty who were practicing dentistry or selling in. toxieating liqunrs or drugs without having pro-' per authority, has now turned his attention to a certain class of females who practice, mid- wifery. We understand he has ou his list two iu Usborne, three in Zurich, and two in Credi- ton. One of fhe Usbotuo viedms has been ffued twenty dollars nud costs. The ..way Itir. Smith finds these lacl'es out is very ingenious. Be goes to the Clerk of each township, and ex- amines the register, and if the name of the medical attendant does not appear in uonneo- tion with the registration of births he goes to. the delinquent parents and threatens to have them fined for omitting the doctor's name when registering the birth. The parents then impart to him the irformatfon which he is seeping, when he goes itntuediately to the sus- 1 peeted lady and endeavors to eeoure her aerv- ices, and after getting ber to commit herself he has her fined, and in this way makes consid- erable money, as he gets the full amount of the fine. M.uuN° CAPITAL OUT or NOTinxso.-An item published in a certain sheet last week, would naturally lend the reader of it, if. he did not kuow better, to suppose that •nearly ell our busiuess men aro in great finanoial difficulty. It says that a certain Division Court bailiff, on being interviewed.a few days ago, stated that he had fifty executions in his pocket at that time. and that he was unable to keep up with his work, although he was working night and day. Mr. J. D. Ellis, Fifth Division Court Bailiff for this county, has been asked several tunes if he was tbs bailiff rofelTed to, and to set the matter at rest, authorizes us to state that he never made any such statements to any pc) son. A neper watch will willfully mis- represout the finaucial staucling of the people of any community; and esspecially the one in which it is pabiished, is not deserving of sup- port. We feel confident there Li not a town in Ontario whose business :nen are sounder than those in Exeter are. During the last few years, there has been depression iu almost ev- ery branch' of busiuess, brit there have been very few • failures in Exeter. ' The two mentioned in the item to which we .refer aro not failures that arc attributable to the string- ent tunes. The elm vote caused by the injudi- cious expenditure of ruuney in builling wlticb should have remained in the business. We shall not express an opinion'as to the cause of the other. The less said about it the better. 'Jibe next time the' bailiff calls noon the proprietors of the paper alluded to in nis of- ficial capacity, it to be hoped they will not cousole themselves by making it appear ;that the whole orimtnant* are hi the -vacuo box with themselves. But, somothtug must be said against the'snceessfnl wutkiug of the Na- tinual Policy, you know, no 'tatter how un- founded. • Fall Shows. END OF THE SERVANT WHO KILLED HER MIS'teREaS ' l.ND BOILED THE RE3XIINS. London, July 29.-1rate Webster, re- cently convicted of the murder' of Mrs. 'Phomas, her mistress, at Richmond, was hanged to -day iu the Wordsworth prison, which is ou the Burry side of the Thames, four miles southwest of Loudon. She confessed that she corn- milted the murder, and had no accom- plices either iu the commission of the crime or the disposal of the remains of of thewietim, portions of which were discovered iu u box floating in the l'ltames, and led to the arrest of the murderess. Tne murder of Mrs. Tboinas was one of the most remarkable crines oh re- cord. Mrs. Thomas was a widow lady in oornfoi table circunlstaeces, residing at Itiehtnoud quite alone, save. for the cowpony of her servant. The latter became infatuated with a married man Danced Church, and couceived the idea of murdering ber mistiest; and possess- ing herself of the property, aud after disposing of it to go to Amerloa with the proceeds, accompauied by Ohureb. She uarriod out her part withgreat de- liberation and murdered her mistress by straugling her to death one Sunday: afternoon. Early ill the mouth. of Maroli hest she dragged the body of her victim to the cellar of the house where she disrobed it, and by aid of a caw and int axe out it to pieces, some of which Abe ,boiled to prevent recoguition. She wrapped . some other fragments and placed them in n wooden box, wbioh alto managed to convey .to the river and; throw over the tu,idge. These frog - merits were tonna' and identified some time after the murder had been. com- mitted. Meantime Webster, in Connec- tion with her paramour, ()butch, had sold mull of the property of the mur- dered uotnea, ur-derethno:rlttl,, and wits on the point of removing the rernrtinder attic furniture, when scone suspicion: of the, neighbors wore excited, and Webster became al- armed.` Slits went to Ireland, wider° she' was soon ' after arrested. Upon her arrest shee declared she woe not the murderer, but that Church, during her nbsotice from the house, had entered it and killed Mrs. Thomas, and upon her The Huron and lltllddlesex Fire Insurance Oomapny. From the combined reports of the Maaagar, Mr. Greatly, the (1euerul Agent, Mr. Sharp, and the Anditers, we would argue, the operat- ions of the new oompa i ' have been satisfactory and profitable. The rapid progress of the .Huron and Widdlesex since its cotninencetnent seveti•moutits ago, so far has met the most sanguine expectations of its nuts- eroua welhwistters, 'and the financial sbee& has proved iu every way satin• factory. Five -hundred policies have already been issued, covering repel ty to the amount of $800,000.
