Ou Saturday evening a young man
named Jame', Lund, son of Mr. James
Lund, of East Oxford, was drowned
while bathing in Hill's Pund, a few
miles south of Woodstock. Deceased
was about 18 years of age, and his death
is felt very keenly by his parents.

News of a most melancholy accident
reached the city of Ottawa Sunday even-
ing. Two young men, E. 0. Bottell
and J. K. Hendrie, sous of prominent
citizens, went fishing 0,, Saturday after-
noou in the Ottawa river, below Des-
cheues Rapids, where the current is
very swift. Their boat Was drawn into
an eddy, and became nucontrollable,
and finally capsized, throwing them
into the water, and before assistance
could be given both were drowued. Thu
bodies have not yet beeu reeovered.
St. Catharines Journal :--"Lagt year

A painful accident occurred to Mr.
Wm. Bishop, proprietor of the Wood-
stock House, Monday evening, about 7
o'clock. His horse had been brought
out for him, aud while it was standing
in front of the hotel some rascal took
the nuts off the two front axles of the
carriage, so that whew Mr. Bishop en.
tered the vehicle and commenced to
drive both the wheels oetne off and
threw hitn down iu front uf the buggy.
The horse, becoming frightened, kicked
violeutly, and fractured the legs of the
unfortunate and prostrated him before
he was released from his dangerous
position. He was taken itteide, where
his 'wounds where properly dressed.
Much eympathy is exprevsed for Mr.

A pigeon -flying match took place be-
tween Antwerp (terriers belonging to
A. W, Bosep and C. Ayer, of St, Cet-
harines, and J. James, of Yorkville.
The race was from this oity to St, Oen,

were liberated simultaueously at Lon-
onrednesday last. Mr. Weep's
bird, Lady Van, arrived at St. Cathar•

after being flown. Mr. James' Bird,

ville two hours and forty-elht minutes
after leaving Loam. Mr. Ayer 's
Wild Rover arrived home in two hours

home shortly afterwards. The other
birds have not returned yet. The dis'
tance from Loudon to Toronto is 115
mules, and from London to 81. Cathar-
ine's 108 miles, so Mr. James' bird
won by seveu minutes.

animals had gone into Central Park

A statement has been issued by the
United States War Department, giving
tee number of men furnished the
Union army by each State and Terri-
tery from April 15th, 1861, to the close
of the war of rebellion. It shows that
the total number of volunteers was 2,-
678,967.
