The nomination of candidates for South Huron in the Legislative As- sembly took plaoe at Hensall on Thus - day last, 29th May. Mr. John Beat- tie, of Seaforth, returning -officer. The attendance was very good. Proceed- ings oommenoed at nue o'clock. Only 11Ir. Jaekson and Mr, Bishop were no- minated, Mr, Jackson being proposed by I1r. D. H. Ritchie, seconded by Mr. ,Cresswell, Reeve of Tuckersnlith, aud 111r. Blahop by Mr. John 'Parsons, of Crediton, and Mr. D. D. Wilson, of Seaforth. After receiving nomina• -tions, a public meeting was convened in Purdy's Hall, which was well filled. Mr. Wm. Lewis, of Stephen, was called to the chair, which position he filled to the satisfaction of all. The proposers and seconders were allowed fifteen minutes and the two candidates an hour eacli, Mr. Bishop to precede Mr. Jackson and to close the meriting with a reply of ten minutes, in which he •was to touch upon no new subject. Mr. Parsonsbriefly urged the claims of Mr. Bishop, and was followed by Mr. •Ritchie, who touslied upon the finan- cial phase of the question andshowed how uuharnlonious were Mr. Bishop's pledges" to the people with his course in the Legislature, where he has support- ed the most profligate extravagance. Ile spoke in high terms of Kr. Jack- son, who had come to this country when ten years old, helped to clear a farm, logged and labored in the fields just the same as all the rest of t e early farmers, and was able to under• stand the requirements of the farming community just as well as Mr. Bishop, while iu every other respect he was s, much more able man and would make a better representative. Mr. D. Wilson next asoeuded the Illatform, and paid a high tribute to Mr. Jackson's eharaoter aud nbililea. ?3e had kuown him intimately fur a number of years, and bad never heard the faintest suspicior breathed against him. He•ooaldu't speak so confidently of Mr. Bishop, because he wad not so well acquainted with him. He sup-' ,forted Mr. Bishop ora :party grounds and because he was a supporter of Mr. `Iowat'a GoverLment---a Gov. riLtnent which be (Mr. Wilson) believed to be sue best aud purest Governmout in the world. He had strong faith in that `tavern -neat. He believed it was s. good Government. He believed they bad been economical. He believed all that was said against them to be un • true. He believed they labored only iu -the interest of the people. Re again believed we had a good (Iovernineut. ?Ie •believed the people would believe so too, He believed this Government w ould be sustained. He believed Mr. Bishop would be ()looted too. If a pin (4othing less than a four-inoki auger bol , however, would do justioe to the flow) were stuck into Mr, Wil- son and all Lfs faith allowed to run out, the W1ls n portion remaining could only be Knot with the aid of a mioros- cope; or if miracles were not out of fashion, awe might confidently expect another Ascension without the aid of Caron am, the Stygian stream. Mr, Cr ssweli was intimate with both oandates, and knew nothing , to the disore it of the oharaoter of either, AIr, Biahohe considered a failure as a legislator J.n tho County Council he had *adored sadly iu matters which had eon entrusted to him, and was not at tall 'qualified to represent such an iia.portant constituency as z.
