for the manufacture of the Bland safety

A large New York firrn are about es-
tablishing a branch in Toronto, for the
Inanufacte.re of buttons end other SID all
wares.
A gentleman from O3wego is pros-
pecting in the vicinity of St. Oatherines
'for the establishment of a shoddy cloth
factory in that city.
Port Stanley is moving for the es-
tablishment of the rolling mills. and so
is St. Thomas, there is brisk compe-
tition between the two paces.
Messrs. Smith & Wilby:: of Toronto,
are making large additons to and put-
ting a quantity of new machinery in
their woollen mill at Weston.
A large piano -forte manufactory is
being built in Kingstou, by Webber &
Co., of New York. They expect to em-
ploy two llnndred and fifty hands.
Messrs. J. H. Kelly & Co., engine
and, bailer makers of Hamilton, an •
uounoe that they are now busier than
they have -been for years past.
The new oatmeal mill has been start-
ed at Springfield, Elgin County, and in
the sane place the manufacture of bar-
rel heaclinga is to bo engaged in.
ill.esers. J. M. Willianle & Co., of the
Hamilton Tin and Stamping Works,
have been tanning till midnight (luring
the past few weeks. They have any
quantity of orders on hand.
The Redpath Sugar Refinery at
Montreal has resealed operations, em-
ploying in the meantime 800 hands,
which number vrill be increased to 1100
after the opening of navigation.

hwve a capital of 910,000 bushels,

D. M. Ferry & Co., the well.known
seed merchants of Detroit, have rented
buildings at Windsor, Out., and intend
opening a branch house in that place.
They are fitting up the premises lately
occupied by Girdlestone, Orris & 0o.,as
a pork packing establishment, and will
be ready far business in a short time.
The Canada. Sorew Company,of Dan -
des, are busy preparing to commence
drawing wire. They intend to mann-
facture all lands required for general
use, as sell as what they want for
screws, bolts and rivets. They have a
cargo of rocas on the way, and will oom-
nienoe work on its arrival.
Messrs. Bali & Co., the well known
organ nlauufactnrers, Guelph, are ex
tremely busy fiiliug orders for the home
)market. By the change in tariff the
Messrs. Bell aro now euabled to give
five per cent, bettor terms to home cis.

Mr. Alex. Gartsbore, of Hamilton,
has received au order frotn the Ameri-
can gentlemen wtio have taken posses-
sion of the rolling mills in that city,for
the casting of twelve sets of rolls for
merchant iron work. It is uuderetood
that the company will roll boiler plates,
ordinary merchant iren, and may also
engage in rail making. Between 250
and 300 peen will be employed.
))Messrs. Darrow, Stewart i& Milne, of
Hamilton, who have bad their saddlery
hardware manufaotry unearly swamped
by undue composition from American
horses, are lnakiug preparations to car-
ry on this department with renewed
activity. They expect to be able in the
course of five weeks, to employ as )many
Hien as they did four or five years ago,
U, S. TROOPS To AID ENGLAND.
General W. W. Duffield, State Sena-
tor of Michigan, has renewed his offer,
through Uolouel Growslii, to raise an
American contingent of 5,000 troops
to aid Great, Britain in any of her wars
except against the United States, the
contingent to consist of four regiments
of infantry, one battallion of cavalry,
and one battery of artillery. The con-
ditions are that the troops be drilled by
the United States tactics, have U. S.
promotion, wear U.S. nniform, be arm-
ed with Sharpo's rifles, muster Windsor,
Ont., and be guaranteed fres transpor-
tation back to muster point. Gen.
Duffield agrees to furnish them within
three months. This is a renewal of an
offer made when war with Russia was
imminent, as is made note in view of
the complications with Egypt which
are by some attributed to the Czar's
diplomacy, The Detroit "Evening
News," which gives publicity to the
above fact in a long article, says that
when Colonel Growski made a tour in
Canada to ascertain the number of
troops available, he found that only
about 2,000 could be relied upon. • This
reeulted in the negotiations with Gen-
eral Duffield, during the course of which
a conference on this subject took piece

IRELAND.
The Mayor of Derry has offered a
reward of 2100 for the apprehension
of the person who flung the explosive
missile into the assembly room on the
night of the 17th of March.
A. large force 'of Police has been re-
cently drafted down to Connemara to
protect the clergymen and others con-
nected with the Irish Church mission,
who have been several times lately at-
tacked by Roman Catholic mobs.
At Belfast Assizes on March 26th
seven prisoners who had pleaded guilty
of rioting on St. Patrick's Day in Be1-
fast worn sentenced by Mr. Sergeant
Robinson—three to two years' im-
prisonment, two to ten months and
two to font. months' imprisonment
with hard labor.
At the Derry Assizes, two brothers,
William and Alexander Molntyre, were
put ou trial for killing a man named
MoGrirth, by stabbing him iu the
throat with a knife. McGrathbad
been courting their sister,and was in
her company when he was murdered.
William was Requited, but Alexander
was sentenced to ten year's' penal servi-
tude.
The General Committee .of the
Moore Centenary, at a late meeting,
resolved that subscribers of one pound
should be admitted free to the literary
and musical entertainment. The Lord
Mayor annouuced his intention of1 iv -

address, seeking oo•operation from the
ladies of Ireland, was referred to the
