M. C. CAMERON, Esq., Q. 0, spoke in i
the House for four mortal hours upon
the National Policy. If he displays as
much knowledge in the House as he
<lid on the stamp, the members must
havo baso highly edified by his half
anile of Wallin
WE fancy we see what is wrong with
our representative. The London Free
I ° Press has done it. In a sarcastic vein
.one day, that paper suggested him as
the possible leader of the party. The
poor fellow has evidently taken it in
,earnest, and is making a desperate ef-
fort to shout Mackenzie off the track.
If rubbishy ani windy orations calvary
subject discussed are the regnirements
•of the leadership, than should Mr.
Cameron be elevated without any de-
lay. He has no rival in the House ; E.
B. Wood being a judge now. The Free
Press will some day be stricken with re -
mese for the evil it has worked this
elan Cameron. If it wants to poke fun
at public men,it should select some one
who is better able to bear it.
THERE is a deficit of some $2,400,000
this year, in the Dominion revenue,
which M. C. Cameron proposes to make
up by abolishing the franking lrivilege
anti reducing the Minister's salaries.
M. C. Cameron says many startling
things. The people must have a laugh
occasionally, thud the members of the
Rouse may as well langh at his absur-
dities as at Joe Rymal's jokes; The
only unpleasant feature about it is that
it reflets rather discreditably upon
.South Huron. After M. C.'s election
trial comes off, we'll send them a man
,of a different mould—one who will not
shame his constituents by uttering such
rubbish as Mr. Cameron's is credited
with.
SCENE—(thisis an actual occurrence
not imaginary, as are those which are
recorded in free -trade journals)—Free
trader to protectionist—"Tins Nation •
-
al Policy is not going to do the country'
any good. In my business the United
Sates Manufacturers offer to pay half'
the duty, and reduce the prise so that
.Canadian purchasers will not pay any
more. Canadian enterprises will there-
fore be in the same position they occu-
pied before the increase of the duty,"
Protectionist—"If that's so, does it not
strike you that the United States will
'pay all the duty by taking half of it o&
the price ana paying half of it to the
customs anthorities ? Besides that, the
county will benefit by the taxes drawn
from American producers." "The free
trader saw, and took a holiday to
prepare an answer.
