OnTuesday night about 10:30 o'clock
a fire broke oat in a large frame build-
ing on Thames street, Ingersoll, oe-
cupied by 11Ir. George Patnber;as a con-
fe iionery store and dwelling, and mil-
linery more. The alarm was quickly
soundad and the firemen were prompt-
ly on hand, but owing to the Ory ma-
terial contained in the building it a vas

The Great Western Railway Compa-

on Saturday, judgement was rendered
in the oase of Duncan McDonald vs.
tis Qnebeo Government in which plain -
bur appeals for leave to bring his case
before the Privy Council of England.
He claims from the Quebeo Government
the sum of one trillion dollars on the
railroad which 'he built for them,
Judge Ramsay, who delivered judge-
ment, said it was a question. of the pos.
,session of real estate. The Court there-
fore granted the petition of the plaintiff.

teroolonial Railway authorities are
trying to find out who are responsible
for the less of four mailbags containing
a number of register ed letters which
have gone astray since January.. Three
of the bags were from St. Jahn, one for
Amherst, one,for Truro and Pioton,and
one for klalifax; the fourth hag was

Illondoy evening about eleven o'clock
a fire broke out ha the stable belonging
to Cornell's Hotel Stratford. A breeze
was blowing at the time, and the stable
and sheds fell a speedy prey to the
flames. A valtnable span of horses, be-
longing to T. McCormick, of 'London,
also perished. The lose is estimated
at '$2,500; insurance $500. The fire
is supposed to be the work of au incen-
diat'y.
Saturday night about half past eleven
o'clock, a fire was discovered in Be
Clow's grocery and liquor store Luck -
now. The fnllawiug are the losses :-
R. Glow, loss, $1,000; insurance, $500.
Mrs. McKinnon, dry goods and grocer-
ies, loss on stoop, $4,000; insurauce,
$2,0000; building owned by Mrs. Mur-

Quebec municipal matters seem to be
re t approaching a crisis. Coanoillor
Russell, one of the most intelligent' of
the city fathers, speaking at Friday,
night's Council meeting and urging the
impolicy of allowing the city's debeo-
tures to go to- protest, said he feared
that contingency could not bo staved
off muoh longer. He contended. that
with 90 per Dent. of the revenue eaten
up by sinking furd and interest it was
impossible to go on as they were going
without a radical change of the entire
charter in the direction of a reduction
of the numbers of the Council, the nom-
ination of a comptroller, or the transfer
of the civic administration for a few
years to a commission to straighten
our affairs.
The A. has been introduced by the
Minister of Public Works for the amend-
ment of the Railway Act of 1874 as re-
gards railway bridges over canals and
rivers. It provides that in all bridges
hereafter to .be erected over railways,
there shall be seven clear feet of space
between the lower beams of the bright
and the top of the highest freight car;
and any railway curupany adopting
higher ears than those in use at the
time of building any bridge under this
Act, shall be compelled to raise tbia
bridge at their own eoet and charges.
It is also provided that no railway shall
be allowed to pass over any navigable
river nr canal withouthaviug first built
such proper flooring under and on both
sides of the track, as shall be der-med
sufficient by the Minister of Publics
Works, to prevent anything falling from
the railway into each river or canal up-
on boats or vessels navigating it.

body of Mrs. Hiram Taylor, of North-
port, Michigan, was found in a well

Mr. Win, Finney was charged before-
the
eforethe Police Magistrate of Stratford, by
Mr. W. R. Davis, Mayor of Mitohel'I,
with commitiug an as•ault. It arose
out of an article in the t(1vocate, in ref-
erence to a coloring ease which had
been inserted in another journal not al-
together correetly. The case occupied a
great portion of the day, whin Mr.
Honey was c.tmmitted for trial, on a
ohaege of common assault.
A Fearful Leap For Life.

miles from Huntsville on the East Riv-
er. Last Monday morning several
teamsters were at work, as usual, haul-
ing out the Iogs to a precipitous bank
100 feet high, on the river about four
miles from the shanty. For twenty-
five feet high, the descent is perpendicu- •
lar, then there is a slight projecting
poiut ; to the river below, seventy-five
feet, the descent is but a few degrees
out of the perpendicular. Among other
teamsters came George Campbell of
Cambridge, Victoria county, Ont.; with
a hngh load of saw logs. .He was
walking beside his load, between it and
the rolling bank, when the rear end of '
the sleigh slid over the bank and
Campbell jumped for his life over the
pr, cipice. Ho lauded on the projec-
tion after a flight of twenty-five feet.
`.Che horses and load took a through
ticket to the pile of logs in the river.
The sleigh was a total wreck, but,
strange to say, the horses escaped with
a few cuts. They were in about half an:
hour extricated, and were able to walk
to their stables. The driver Campbell,
was notable to rise, sad was carried al-
ternately on the backs of three men to
the shanty. On arrival of the surgeon
tl:eva was found neither a fracture nor
dislocation, nor were there any exten-
sive abed -ions. He was, however, suff-
ering severely, sud had been badly•
ehaken up. The height of the precipice
and the circumstances of the accident
are arrested by the foreman, Mr. Geo
McCormack, and by several reliable
settlers at work in this shanty.
Huron Presbytery.
The regular nesting of Huron Pres-
bytery met in Willis Church, Clinton,
on Tuesday of last week, there being
a large attendance of ministers and el-
ders. A call from Seafortb to Rev. A.
D. McDonald, of Elora, was sustained.
