THE TIMES JANUARY 23, 13T
THE DIRTY OLD MAN.
In A, dirty o1d house lived a dirty old man,
Reap, towels or brushes were not in his plan;.
For forty long years, as the neighbors de -
(dared,
His house never once had been (leaned or
repaired,
'Twos a scandal and sham( to the business-
like street,
One terrible blot in a ledger so neat ;
The old shop with its glasses, black bottles
and vats,
.And the rest o£ the mansion a run for the
rats.
Outside, the old plaster, all spatter and stain.
Looked spotty in sunshine, and streaky iu
rain :
The window -sills sprouted with mildewy
grass,
.And tho panes, being broken, were known to
be glass.
On the ricketty signboard, no ' learning could
spell,
The merchant who sold, or the goods he'd to
sell ;
But for house and for man a new title took
growth,
Like a fungus; the dirt gave a animate thorn
both.
Within these were carpets and cushions of
dust,
The wont was half rot, and the metal half
rust;
Old eurtains—half cobwebs—hung grimly
aloof.
'Twas a spider's elysium from cellar to roof.
There, king of the spiders, the Dirty Old
Mau,
Lives busy and dirty as ever he can :
With dirt on his fingers and dirt on his face,
For the Dirty Old Man thinks the dirt no
disgrace.
From his wig to his shoes, from his coat to
his shirt,
His clothes are a proverb, a marvel of dirt;
The dirt is pervading, unfailing. exceeding,
Yet the Dirty Old M'an has learning and
breeding.
Fine folks from their carriages, noble and
fa;r,
Have entered his shop, less to buy than, to
stare,
And afterward said—though the dirt was so
frightful, •
The Dirty Man's manners were truly delight-
ful.
But they pried not upstairs, thro' the dirt
and the gloom,
Nor peered at the door of the wonderful room
That gossips make much of, in accents
subdued,
But whose abode no one might brag to have
viewed.
The room forty years since, folks settled and
decked,
The luncheon's prepared, and the guests are
expected,
The handsome young host, he is gallant and
gay,
Tor his love land her friends are expected
to -day.
With solid and dainty the table is dressed—
The wine beams its brightest, flowers bloom
their best ;
Yet the host will not smile, and no guest will
appear,
For his sweetheart `is dead, as he shortly
shall hear.
Full forty years since turned the .Ivey in that
door,
'Tis a room deaf and dumb 'mid the city's
uproar ;
The guests for whose joyance that table was
spread,
May now enter; as ghosts, for they're every
one dead.
Through a chink in the shutter dim lights
come and go,
The setts are in orker, the dishes a -row
But the luncheon was wealth to the rat and
the mouse,
Whose descendants have long left that dirty
old house.
Cup and platter are masked iu thick layers of
dust,
The flowers fallen to powder, the wineswath'd
in ernst:
A nosegay was laid before one special chair,
.And the faded. blue ribbon net bound it is
there.
Tho adman has played out his part in the
scene,
"Wherever he now is, let's hope he's more
clean ;
Yet give we a thought free of scoffing or ban,
To net dirty old house and that Dirty Old
Man.

JEALOUS OF A CORPSE. i
Facts for the People
A scene of a very dissagreeable nature OF EXETER ,AND SURROUNDING COUNTRY,
is said to have taken phioe.reeeutly at a
funeral in Pittsburgh. It seems that's l
young married lady wu,o died had, pre-. ; ` . p O W L Co
vioua to her marriage, .reoeivod the at: l r, '
tendons of a gentleman who afterward
married another lady, At the funeral
of the former lady the wife of toe gen.
tlotnan, who is practising his profettsion
in Pittsburgh, repaired to the house
where the last sad rites were being -per.
formed, and when the dlinister had fin-
ished his eulogy of the deceased, elle
approached the eoffi 1 and began to ad-
dress the assembled friends and relatives
in au excited planner, From whstcould
he gathered from her excited utterances,
it would seem that she was jealous of
the deceased, and she announced that,
should her husband approach the coffin
and even so much as look at the corpse,
she would tear out his eyes. The wo-
man because excited and 'violent in her
delnonetreitions, and considerable eon -
fusion resulted tuuotig the astonished
persons present. She was finally eject-
ed from the room, and for fear anorher
would occur, a gentleman was dispatch.
Fd to the pavemehtoatnide. where her
husband was, and requested him not
to enter the house. This unpleasant
incident has occasioned a great deal of
gossip since its ocourreueo, especially
as all the parties occupy high social
positions.
EXCURSION '110 GREENLAND.
1Iany attempts have been made to
penetrate into the interior of G1oen-
land from the west coast, but, until til •
past summer with little success. Tllrt•e
Danish gentleman. Messrs. Jen.t.n,
Kornerup and Groth, under the direr
tion of the Cotnis.iou for Scientific Ex-
ploration in the Danish Colony, started
to explore the coast between Godhabb
and Frederiksha)ib. Lieut. Jensen
took advantage of the upportnnity to
make all exeen.i. IJ into the itttti'l•,r
Over the ice. The aim was t0 Tench
several peaks rising out of the ice. Pile
baggage was 'placed on three t?iu dl
sledges of the travc'llere' own, and the
toilsome 'Jon tliev commenced on July
14. After tsvo days the loose snow tic
onululated to .the sartace of the ice to
such au extent that the jenruiay became
very dangerous, while they continually
sank in concealed crevices and holey,
seeing themselves only by adapting the
Alpiae expedient of attaching thein.
selves to each other with a rope. The
surface of toe ice was generally undu•
Wine. but there were also many r1-,•
sed parts and chasms which rendered
the journey a difficult one. It was
foggy nearly the whole time, arid• on,
July 23 a suowetorm occurred. On
the 24th the ex,,editiou reached the
foot of the mountain above referred lo.
Then came another storm which lasted
six days, with continuous storm and
f )g; the travellers were now snow-blind.
The'weather cleared on the 31st, when
the assent of the mountain might :be
undertaken with sooie prospect of 8110-
coss. The height .was estimated at
about 5,000 feet above the sea level,
and on the other side of the mountain,
as far as the eye could reach ice sheets
and glaciers were seou, and not the
slightest speck of land free of ice. Al
ter flashing their observations the ex
pedition returned and reached their
starting point, on August 5tli, having
been away for twenty-three days.. The
mountains referred to were forty miles

HOW GIRLS ARE'. MADE
STRAIGHT.
IThe Hindoo girls are graceful and
exquisitely 'fanned. From their earliest
' childhood they are accustomed to carry
burdens nn their heads. The water for
family use id always broli'Oht by the
gir14 in earthen jars, carefully poised
lit) this tray. The exercise is said to
I strengthen the muscles of the back,
while the chest is tlirotvin forwead. ,1Vo
crooked backs are seen itt Hitidostan.
Dr. H. Spray says that this exorcise of
carrying small v6ssele of water on the
handl plight be : advantageously in-
tr(,linaed into- cu r. boarding-selleels and
private fttlnilies, and that it might
eutirely supersede the present ma-
chinery of dumb•belis, back -beards,
gl:input*•ropes, &e. The young ladies
ougi)t to be taught to carry the jars as
those Eliudoo women d,', without ever
t' itching it with their handy. The
salve practice "of carrying wailer leads to
Ilrec.sily the same results 111 the south
t,f Spain and the south of Italy as in
India. A. Neapolitian female peasant
will carry on her head a vessel full of
water to the very brim, over:a rough
road, and not, spill it drop of ,it; and
the aognisition of this: art or haat;
gives her the salve erect and elastic
