THE MAN WHO STOLE, TiiE
AGREEMENT.
A. Woolwich correspondent sends the
following to a Glasgow paper :--The
young man, Charles Malvin, charged
with abstracting and publishing the
State document known as the 'Anglo -
Russian Agreement,' was resident for
several years in Russia. His parents
are still living in St. Petersburg. where
his father, who was formerly as engin-

Doek•yard, holds an appointment.
Young Marvin travelled a great deal in
Russia, and is intimately acquainted

He was a seedy, threadbare -looking
individual, and occupied a seat in the
ladies' car. J.he conductor inquired
for tickets ; the threadbare man shook
his head sadly

man, brace up!'
'No money,' still ead!y.
'Get off at the next station.'

THE TIMES
During a dancing party at a place
called Mohohler, near Ballingarry,
county Tipperary, two men, named
Fox and O'Brien, were stabbed, and
the injuries proved fatal. Six persons
who were present at the party have

affecting his sight he came home about
two years ago, and has since lived in
Plumstead, appearing occasionally in
public as a lecturer on scintific subjects
and displaying considerable intelligence.
Having corresponded while in St. Pe-
tersburg with one or two English news-
papers, he at first tried to earn a living
upon the press. but met with iutliller-
eut success, and, after passing the usu-

never made any secret of the fact that
he was in the habit of increasing his
income by literary work. The office iu
which he was employed consista of two
rooms, one of which is occupied by i. r.

you to get off ?'
'Yes. sir.'
'Well, did you ?'
'Yes,' sir, of course.'
'But you got on again.'

'Well, my friend, next time I want
you to get off, and stay off. Do you
understand that ?'
Obtaining no answer, the irate con-
ductor passed on, As the train stop.
ped in the next town the conductor
looked in the car—The neat was empty.
Satisfied, the conductor passed
through the cars as soon as they were
out of the city. There sat the thread-
bare personage in the carne seat very
much interested in the scenery.
The conductor gave Sina a viciou"
dig in the rills.

'Well, now my friend,' went on the
conductor, 'do you know what Inca go-

'Yes, sir, of course,' answered the
seedy man, ]uoekly.
True to his word, the iritato conduc-

meek but pennilessfriond,and when the
train stopped in Worcester, they seized
him by tae collar and kicked hitt from
one end of the depot to the other.
'There !' said the o•fuduct.lr ; I
guess we are rid of hila.'
The train steamed out of SVorehester.
The man of ehoecks went through the
usual routi,te,and when he came to the

gazing southward.
He approached him.

The astonished conductor thrust l,iw

heard, were a triumphant :

SCIENCE.
The blood is one-fifth the weight of
the body.
The muscles of the human jaw exert
a force of 534 lbs.
An ordinary gas flame requires as
much air as nine persons.
The Iierht of lightning and its reflec-
tions will penetrate through a distance
of from 150 to 200 miles.
Flame is quenched in air containing
8 per cent. of carbogic acid ; the same
perceutage is fatal to animal life.
A heavy dew is regarded aa,the pre-
cursor of rain, because its formation
indicates that the air is saturated with
moisture.
At Kingston-ou-Thames, soil brought
up from a depth of 300 feet, and then
covered with a hand -glace, exhibited
speedy vegetation.
A fish in Java calltd the ejaculator,
catches flies and other insects by squirt-
ing from its mouth some water, and
seldom misses its aim at a distance of
5 or 6 feet, bringing down a fly with a
single drop.
Mountainous localities are more
rainy than flat ones, because the moun
tains attract the clouds, and because•
the olouda that are flying low are borne
against the sides of the mountains
and directed upwards, where they sleet
with cold currents of air.
The safest situation to be in during
a thunder storm, is the centre of a
room, isolated as far as possible from
surrounding objects, sitting in a chair,
and avoiding handling any of the con-
ducting substances. The windows and
doors should be closed to prevent drafts.
