TWO SEATS, slowly ten the etert and the thistles
have .an opportunity to gain a foothold.
Travelling a long distance into the
West some few years aga we journeyed
in the sumo car with a woman of two
seats, and we heard her tell four seat-
seekera that her extra seat was "en-
gaged for a blend," batt the friend must
have been a "gamier ier friend, for he
never pot hi: an at"11e.it auee and the
lady occupied the two seats until the
find of the jouruey.
Occasionally a lean is fund who
shows courage. On the Lake Shore!
nud: Michigan Southern hallway we
once saw one of areas heroes. Ha was
middle-aged and hark, and looked. as if
among the Michigan pine stumps he
might be equal to any patented amnia
puller ever invented. Ile was chewing
away at al, high-presenre rate nn a wad
of fine-cut, and squirting the juice there-
of without regard to Snrroua,clings.

very shrill treble, "I want that air sit-

THE TIMES
The urop xs nearly ready to harvest.
Here and there, in looking over the
field, a thistle is seen, but a stranger
would never mistrust how foul Orefield

THE MAN FROM MAINE.
When Maine wasa district of Massa-
ct.usetts, Ezekiel Whitman was chosen
to represent the District in the Massa-
chusetts Legislature. He wan an eccen-
tric man, and one of the best lawyers
or his time. lie owned a farm, and.
slid touch work on his land ; and when
the tznie came for Trim to go to Boston
his beet suit of elothea was a hit of
homespun. His wife objected to his
going in that garb, but tie did not care,
"I wilt i;et a nice alit mode as aeon
as I reacts Bostcon," ho said.
Reaching hie deeet,ltt'iat', Whitaten

Let it bo n„dereto•-rd, that he was a
graduate of 1:1 Lrvard, and at this tavern
he was at holne, As ha entered the
parlor of the house he found several
ladies and gentlemen aliflembIed, and
heard the follntuiug remark from one
of them. "Alt, here came a country-
man of the real homespun genius.
Here's fun."
Whitman stared at the cotllpany and
then sat down.
".Say, my friend, are yon from the
oonntry, ' remarked one of the gentle-
men.

' Ya.as," answered Ezekiel, with a
Indict -one twist of the face.
".And what do you think of our city?"
asked one of the ladies.
"*It's a pooty thickly settled place
anyhow, it's got a sweeping sight of
houses in it."
"And a good many people, too ?"

The wino was brnnght.
"Yon mart drinit a toast."
"0, git out 1 i eat toast; never heard'
of arch a thing as drinkin' it. But I
can give you a sentiment."
The tadiee clapped their hand•, ; b11

"Ladies and gentlemen, permit me
to wish you health and happiness, with
every blessing earth can afford ; and
may you grew better and wiper in a t-

that outward appearances are decei f 11.
Yon mistook me, from my dress, for a
country booby, while I from the snore
superficial cause thought you were la-

been mutual."
lie bad just finished when Caleb
Strong, Governor of the State, entered
and inquired for Whitman.
"Ah, here I am, Governor. Glad to
see you." Then turning to the dumb-
tounded company, he -said :
"I wish you a very good evening."

Genas FOR SHIRT Bosons.—A laun-
drette gives the following receipt for
doing up shirt bosoms : Take two
ounces of fine white gumarabin pow-
der, put it into a pitcher, and pour on
a pint or more of water, and then hay-
ing covered it, let it stand all night.
In the morning pour it carefully from
the dregs into a clean bottle, errrk it,
and keep it for use. A teaspoonful in
a ;hint of starch made in the usual
manner will also give to lawns either
white or pink, a look of newness, when
nothing else can restore them, after
they have been wuslled.
KILLING CANADA THISTLES.
I had on my farm a four acre field
t.• covered with Canada thistles. I say
"had" because I am convinced the
present season's treatment bas made it
too hot for them and I shall seeno
snore of them. The land was strong
--"it makes good land to raise good
thistles." One half of the field was
seeded immediately after ploughing ,and
a thorough working with a two horse
cultivator, with soiling corn. Tbis was
put in drills, thirty inches apart, with
a large one horse seed drill— about three'
and a half bushels per acre. By the
frequent use of the cultivator the space
between the rows was kept Olean, and
directly in the rote the few that have
stuck up their heads look Very yellow
and sickly shaded by the dense growth
df corn. The remainder of the field.
was heavily: seeded with• Hungarian
grass. • Titr.ely showers have made
the season favorable for this crop, and
it has grown :rapidly, smothering the
disagreeable former occupants of the
soil. I do not consider this so success=
.ful a mode of"treatrnent: asnthe former;
because 'Hungarian itrase grows so

CHEERFUL WOMEN.
In marrying, men should seek happy
women. They make a terrible mistake
when they marry for beauty, orfortal-
ent, or for style. The sweetest wives
are those who possess the magic secret
of being happy under any and all cir-
cumstances. Rich or pour, high or
low it makes no difference, the' bright
little fountain bubbles up just as music-
ally iu their hearts. Nothing ever goes
wrong with them—no trouble is too
serious for thein "to make the best of
it." Was ever the stream of calamity
so dark and deep that the sunlight of a
happy face failing a rose its turbid
tides would not wake au answering
gleam ? Why, then, joyous tempered
people don't know half the good t hey
do. No matter how cross and cr,rbbed
you feel, no matter if your brain is full
of meditation, our "afflicting dispense -
hens," and your stomach with medi-
cines, pills and tonics ; just set one of
those cheerful little women talking to
you, and we are not afraid to wager
anything she can cure you. The long
drawn lines about the mouth will relax
-the cloud of settled gloom will vanish,
nobody knows where, and the first:
thing you know you will be heartily
laughing I, Ah, what a blessing are
these happy.wnmen 1 How often their
little:hands 'guide ;the ponderous ma-
chine of life with an almost invisible
touch! How we look forward through
-the weary day to their fireside smiles 1
No one knows, no one ever will know
until the day of judgment reveals,
how much we owe to these helpful,
hopeful, uncomplaining, happy ' wo-
men.
