duction, to all progress. A. tariff unites and
benefits both, just as the two elements com-
bined are wealth and comfort created, The
beat interests of society are promoted just in the
ratio that wagos are increased. The taste for
comfort, elepanciea, and enjoyments which edu-
cated life demands, should everywhere be dif-
fused
iffused and everywhere be attainable. There can
be no prosperity, there can be no real progress
where they are not interwoven with and made
part of civilized life. A protective tari11 is the
means ofprocuringthem. Low wages exclude
them. • From the dawn of associated life to this
hour there has been no spur to the improve-
ment of the human family equal to high wages.
Crime, ignorance and destitution are the unfail-
1ng accompaniments of low wages. It is ade-
quate wages which have•ntadethe United. States
what they are. Low wages have made Ireland
what she is. High wagos procure homes, in-
dustry, improvement, independence; low wagos
force men into hovels, degradation and want.
The welfare of society hinges on wages. Ade-
quate wages are as essential to general prosper-,
ity as nutriment is to the health and vigortof
the body. Scrimp the wages and you scrimp
the stomach; diininish the wagos and you di-
minish the clothing. High wages is self-respect
in comely raiment; low wages is sneaking p6l-
erty in rags..
The Free Trade economist, full of worn-out
platitudes and lying philosophies, says to the
poor mal: If there is a tariff on tea of fifty
per cent., you have to pay once and a halfforit
what you would have to pay if there was no tar-
iff. Without a tariff you can buy coffee for 20
cents per pound; with a tariff you would have
to pay 30 cents per pound. And taking articles
the laboring man buys and daily uses, the argu-
ment is unanswerable. ,But it is these very
economists who ,forcea tdriff on the necessities
of the producer. Our answer to the 000nomists
of this order is plain, unanswerable and definite.
