otue time before, Onager had heard
an old cow doctor say, that fish oil
poured into a cow's ear. would cure the
hollow horn. Dropping the fork he
had been using he rushed to the douse,
It was Sunday morning, and Onager
had on hie white shirt, and braadcloth
snit, ready to attend church. It had
been raining, and the path was slip -
pert', but Guager thought nut of this,
not' of hie new gloaters, but ruelhed
mealy on, He did not strap at the
front door, but ran ou to the l:iteneu.
As be turned. the corner be slioped and
fell dhreetly under the kitchen window,
14I.rs. Guager having finished washing
the tidies, picked up t;..e pan of dirty
water and dashed it Plit of the window,
not upon the .ground its she supposed,
but upon the snow white shirt and
glossy broadcloth of Mr. Guager.
44 What did you run under that win-
dow for ?„ yelled Mrs. Gueger, as
Gouger entered the Itittshen all Wet and
dripping from this morning bath.
'' Do you., think that I. have nothing
else to do but wash fine sbirte and
have yon dirty them in that kind of a
wry you old loggerhead ?" " Auuu da
the cow'a sick --Lille has gat the hollow
horn, where is the fish nil ? Why
don't you, hurry "' exclaimed Onager
excitedly. " Get out 'o hero you
greasy object," screenne i Mrs. Guager.
Onager eaeit that Hangs looked
stormy, but he moat get that fish oil
er the cow would die.: This bottle,
with some dozen others, sat upon a
shelf high up over the kitchen window.
Onager knew tine, cel he merle caleu.
bilious accordingly.. Springing upon a
chair that sit under a shelf, Ito reached
for the Ask oil. Now it happened that
he spade o mistake, and instead of the
fish oil,ho got a bottle of ammonia, that
WAS ou the same ehoif, sand started for
the barn. l'frs.. Guager started after
him, with seven little Guagore follow-
ing in her wake. When she reached
the barn alae saw Onager striving to
hold the cow while he poured, the mod

'lane in Ler oar.
;Seeing his dilemma, she caught the
cow by the borne and held her. Guag-
er grabbed both and turned the fish oil
—no the amenia into the cow'e oar.'
Then what a scene. Gravitation seem-
ed to have no power over that cow.
With a snort her heels rose in the :fair,
coining in contact with a little Guager,
and making him turn a somersault
over a basket of turnips,, and alighted
with his head ina pail of bran mash
that had been prepared for the sick
cow. When her heels came dawn her
head rose in air. Her horn caucht in
Mrs Guager'e jacket, lifting her off
her feet and bumping her bead against
a beam overhead. Whirling on her
hind feet she escaped from the barn,'
with Mrs. Onager hanging to her horn,
and screaming to Guager to help her.
Just below' the barn, was a creek,
;across which was a narrow bridge. In
her mad frenzy the cow made for
this bridge, runniog close to its edge.
As she did so airs. Guagnr's jacket
gave way, and she slipped from the
cow's horn into the creek. After rol-
ling and struggling for a while she
succeeded in extriooting herself from
the muddy water, but what a sight it
was. Her dress was torn, her hoops
were broken, andlher hat was ruined;
but she was heard to say she would
tear enough hair out of Guager's head
to ]Bake another j one. iThat night

Somebody writes to a rural news-
paper to ask " how long cows should
be milked ?"Why, the same as short
cows, of a;ourse.
A Yankee gentleman, escorting a

took him to Bunker's Hill, they stood

did it hurt him much ?" The native
looked at him, ._Hurt him 1" Said he,

" Well X should think he would have

Yes, we agree with thot old pont who
said that a logs, eget"race was au "ex—
cellent thing in a woman.". Indeed,
we feel inedined to go much farther
than he has en the subject and call it
her crowning charm. No matter what
other attreetioths ane may have ; she
may be as fair as the Trojan Helen
and uta learned las the fanlious Hi pe-
Oda of aucieut times ; she mayhave all
the accomplishments considered requi-
site at the present day, and every ad-
vantage that wealthcan procure, and
yet if elle lacks a low, sweet voice, she
eau never be really fasttivating. How
often the spell ofbeauty is broken by
coarse, louts talking. .ow often you
are irresistibly drama to a plain, unas-
suming woman, whose soft, silver tones
render Ler !positively attractive. I e-
sldea, we fancy we can judge of the
character by too voice ; the bland,
smooth, fawning tones seem to be -to.
keu deceipt and lhypoeriey as insist-
ably ee the hnitsical subdued voice in-
dicates ref nemeut. In the social cir-
cle, stow pleasant it is to hear a woman i
tall; in that low key which always cher-
aeteltizes the true lady. In the sauct-
uary, at home, how such a voice soothes
the fretful child and cheers the weary
;husband. Iiow sweetly Its cadence l
floats through the sick chamber awl
around the dying bed ; with what
solemn melody do they breathe a pray-
er for the departing soul. A4b, yes, a

and I do not think that there is any ex-
port for them; indeed, as the sheep of
3toumelia only give two pounds and
ttree-quarters to a fleece, the amount
produced is probably barely sufficient
for internal consumption. One of the
most striking thing iu those villages is
the apparently ceaseless industry of the
woolen and girls, every one of whom,
whether sitting on the door step, walk-
ing in the streets, or going to the foun-
tain with her pails over her shoulder
like a milk -maid, always carries a hank
of wool tied on a aistaff under one arm,
and twirls a spindle, In Eazan I
walked for twenty minutes without
being able to find one—literally one—
evoman or girl above eight years of
age without this accompaniment, and
mothers carry their little babies in a
sort of bag on their backs, sons to have
their hands fiee to use the spindle.

An old Highlander, rather fond of
his toddy, was ordered by his physici-
an, during a temporary illness, not to
exceed one ounce of spirits daily. The
old gentleman was dubious about the
amount, and asked his son, a school-
boy, how much a ounce was. " Six-
teen drachms make one ounce," was
the reply. " Sixteen drams ! What
au excellent doctor 1" exclaimed the
Highlander. " Run and tell Donald
McTavish and big John to come doon
the nicht."
A SPfDRR'S LABGS GAVE.—Many re-
markable aneadotes have been told il-
lustrating the skill and seeming intel-
ligence of the spider, but no more
worthy of note than a circumstance
which ocoured in our villaoe the other
day, which was witnessed by a number
of curiosity lovers, In the cellar of
Mr. Pelson Williams a spider had pre-
pared his web between a barrel and a
tub, and there, suspended from the
grouhd, hung a small snake about ton
or eleven inches inlength. The thread
had been ingeniously twisted or woven
about the tail of the unfortunate reptile
and it was evident that he had been
drawn up from the ground to the peril-
ous ' position. The spider seemed
anxiously watching his squirming vic-
tim from one corner of the web, prob-
ably waiting for life to become extinct,
when he would probably indulge in a
reptile repast, as a reward for his cun-
ning. The snake remained in this pre-
carious attitude for thirty-six hours af-
ter it was discovered, and then escaped,
cheating the adroit spider after all.
