Marked Increase at Festival
STRATFORD - General Manag-
er Gary 'nomas announced No-
vember 18 the final box office fig-
ures for the Stratford Festival's
42nd season. The six month sea-
son, which encompassed a total of
498 performances of 10 produc-
tions in three theatres earned gross
box office revenue of S17,261,022.
total attendance for the season's
productions was 466,091, repre-
senting 60.4 percent of capacity.
The increase in attendance of
18,253 from the 1993 season is
particularly encouraging given that
the Festival, in an effort to reduce
expenses, schedules 23 fewer per-
formances in 1994.
In analyzing the end of season
results, Thomas expressed his
pleasure with the marked increase
in both box office revenue and at -

NOTICE
Township of
Tuckersmith
Township of Tuckersmith Council requests the
cooperation of the ratepayers regarding the parking
of cars and other vehicles on township roads during
the period in which snow clearing operation is
necessary.
The Township will not be held responsible for any
damage done to these vehicles. Also the residents
are asked to cooperate by not pushing or dumping
snow or ice out of private driveways onto public
roads as this practice could lead to an accident, in
the event of which the ratepayer concerned could
be held liable.
Council would like to advise that any vehicle parked
on road allowances will be towed away at the
owners expense.

Wedowee, and noted that. "this is
the first time in the Festival's his-
tory that we have exceeded
S17,000,000 in box office receipt,
the first time since 1989 that we
have exceeded 60 percent capaci-
ty, and the second consecutive sea-
son of box office revenue and at-
tendance increases." Thomas
added that "Richard Monette's in-
augural season as Artistic Director
met with great critical acclaim; the
marked increase in attendance is a
testament to the quality of our pro-
ductions. Although advance sales
and attendance figures were lower
than budgeted, the consistently
positive responie by the media and
the public following opening week
contributed to the overall increase.
We look forward to announcing
the complete year end operating
results prior to the annual general
meeting on December 10, 1994."

Winter drivini:
know what
to expect
TORONTO - Help is just a
phone call away for travelers look-
ing for up-to-date information on
winter weather and driving condi-
tions on Ontario highways.
"Our government is committed
to safety," , said Transportation
Minister Mike Farnan. "And safety
is what guides all of our winter
maintenance activities -- from pa-
trolling our highways, to plowing,
to getting information to the pub-
lic."
The Ministry of Transportation's
local and toll-free telephone lines
provide reports on all provincial
highways. Callers can speak di-
rectly with an information officer
or use a touch-tone or cellular
phone to listen to bilingual record-
ed information. The seasonal ser-
vice is available starting today 24
hours -a -day, seven days a week,
until April 3, 1995.
The reports contain the latest in-
formation gathered from a compu-
terized weather -tracking system
with road condition updates from
local ministry maintenance staff.
"Our people are out there patrol-
ling all of Ontario's highways so
they know the driving conditions
on any given road firsthand," said
Farnan. "Travelers can rely on us
to let them know what to expect
when they get behind the wheel.
That way, they can choose the saf-
est route to their destination or de-
cide to wait out a storm."
How soon a provincial highway
is cleared after a snowfall depends
on the severity of the storm, the
highway's location and the volume
of traffic it carries. In most cases,
roads are cleared within 24 hours
after a snowfall.
When a snowfall first begins,
spreaders apply salt to prevent ice
from forming. The salt will help
the plows clear the snow as it be-
gins to accumulate. Sand is used
when the temperature falls below -
18C, when salt is no longer effec-
tive. It does not melt snow or ice,
but does provide better traction for
vehicles.
"Our experienced staff can deal
with every imaginable weather
I condition," Farnan added. Howev-
er, drivers have to realize that our
crews are out there to help and it is
smart to slow down and keep clear
of the plows."
Local drivers can call the London
office for weather updates on driv-
ing conditions at (519) 681-2047.
Cellular telephone users can call
toll free to 1-800-265-5407.
