Rec Hockey League toumament.
New compressor for Zurich
Luckily, the ice didn't have
ZURICH - There was almost no
rec hockey tournament in Zurich on
the weekend - almost.
Last Wednesday the compressor
used to keep the ice frozen at the
Babe Siebert Arena broke down.
That put a big question mark
around whether or not the annual
Zurich Men's Recreational Hockey
League Tournament would be
played.
"It had been acting up the past
couple of weeks," said Zurich arena
manager Jim Ramer.
But by Thursday afternoon the
new 75 -horsepower compressor
was in and although some of the
games had to be delayed, they were
played.
"By the time we got the old one
out and the new one it, it was Fri-
day at midnight," said Ramer.
Fortunately the ice did not have
to be taken out and Ramer said
there was only about a quarter of an
inch of water which built up. He
"said that was because the arena batt,
insulation installed a couple of
years ago.
"It (the ice) held good enough
that we were able to bring it back."
The old compressor was a 50 -
horsepower which means the new-
er, bigger one has more cooling ca-
pacity.
Lots of local teams: There were
14 teams at this year's tournament
which also saw a volleyball tourna-
ment held in the adjacent com-
munity centre in Zurich.
Winning the 'A' final was High -
N -Dry who edged the Jets 4-3.
High -N -Dry opened the tourna-
ment with an 8-2 win over the Zu-

Coaching

Checking
from beind:
Education
and
prevention
The most common cause of
serious spinal injuries in hock-
ey is when a player is checked,
pushed or bumped from be-
hind, and goes head first into
the boards. Such injuries have
left some victims paralyzed for
life.
As a coach, it is your respon-
sibility to ensure that your
players develop the proper atti-
tudes and skills to protect
themselves and opponents
from dangerous hits from be-
hind. Education must begin at
the start of the season.
Coaches at all levels, contact
and non -contact, must help
players develop respect for op-
ponents and rules. Players
must be aware of the conse-
quences of checking, shoving,
or bumping an opponent who
is in the "danger zone", the
three to four metres of ice in
front of the boards. Teach your
players to treat opponents as
they like to be treated them-
selves!
Coaches in categories with
contact should recognize that
checking is an advanced skill
which must be taught using
proper teaching progressions,
and only once the player¢ have
mastered all skating skills.
Safety must be the first priori-
ty when teaching checking
skills.
Here are more suggestions:
• ensure your players stretch
properly before all games and
practices;
• make sure your players in-
clude exercises to strengthen
neck muscles in off -ice train-
ing programs;
• teach your players the
proper technique for receiving
checks, and to always be alert
when in the "danger zone";
• encourage referees to en-
force all rules that penalize
checking from behind.
