There were no little green lep- rechauns skating beside them on the ice. Last Wednesday night, the Lucan Irish pulled off a major upset as they defeated the visiting Exeter Hawks 3-2 in OHA Junior De- velopment League west division ac- tion. It was just the second win in 13 stares for the Irish and the 13th was by no means unlucky as the hosts dominated the game from start to finish. "We came out and had an ex- cellent first period and then a good second and then we laid back in the third," said Lucan coach Scott Bo- gart. If it wasn't for the many key saves Hawks rookie goalie Darren Kints made, the score would have been much higher in favour of the Irish. But Lucan also got great goaltending from veteran Steve Watson. "Goaltending was good at both ends," said Hawks coach Dave Revington. "I think they were the best two guys on the ice." Lucan opened the scoring when second -year winger Travis Stinch- combe outskated Exeter defense - man Jason McBride for the puck and in the corner, knocked McBride down and got a centering pass to Trevor Emms. "He's turned it on in the last three Irish top Stars, Hawks beaten 10-5 PARKHILL - The powerplay is working for the Lucan Irish as they put together a win streak of three games before bowing to host North Middlsex Stars in Parkhill on Sun- day afternoon. Lucan, coming off of wins over Lambeth, Exeter and Seaforth had their backs against the wall early Sunday as they were down 4-0 just four minutes into the game. Coach Scott Bogart yanked start- ing goalie Steve Watson and put rookie Jason Glavin between the pipes to finish the first period. Watson was back in net at the start of the second. The Stars watched as the Irish narrowed the gap to 5-4 but the hosts went on to their fifth win of the season. Lucan has scored 10 powerplay goals in their last three games. Against the Stars, Greg DePrest had two goals and a pair of assists while Mike Jaremchenko, Keith Robson and George Stephens also connected. Stephens, coming off a shoulder injury had one of his better games of the season as he added a pair of assists. Irish 5, Centenaires 2 While Lucan did beat Scaforth in Ilderton on Saturday afternoon they lost a couple of key players in de- fenseman Bryan Steifel and captain Steve Matthews. Steifel was given a two -game suspension for cross-checking and Matthews received his second in- stigator of the year which also saw him get a pair of games. Both will miss Wednesday's game against the same Centenaires but will go to Seaforth on Friday. Saturday night's game was in II- derton because once a year the Irish have a game there to say thank you to that community's minor hockey association for all the fine players they have had graduate to the Jun- ior Development League club. "They had a huge crowd. We started our five players from ['der - ton," said Irish manager Pat Ryan. Scoring for the Irish were De- Prest, Matthews, Christian Criel, Brad Henderson and Robson scored shorthanded and unassisted Qi start things off. Lancers 10, Hawks 5 Lambeth and Exctcr have really gotten to know each other in the last couple of months as Saturday they faced off for ,the fourth time. Teams play each other only five times during the regular season. Sunday night in Lambeth, the hosts led 3-0 after the first period and 6-2 after 40 minutes. For Exeter, who lost their second game in a row, Gavin Snell, Jeff Glavin, Sean McCann, Jamie Cor- nish and Chris Kennedy scored. Ex- eter host Belmont on Friday and travel to Seaforth on Sunday. 1!111()1' •1)' hoch '1' games," said Bogart of Stinch- combe. "He's playing the way he is supposed to." It was 2-0 for the hosts as Greg DePrest, making his return fol- lowing some time away from the club, scored on a backhander at the side of Kints. Stopped on powerplay: Exeter had a two-man advantage late in the period for 1:35 but they couldn't capitalize and were down two goals after 20 minutes. "They just outplayed us. They were hungry for their second win more than we were for our IOth," said Revington. The Hawks had a great scoring opportunity in the first period when blueliner Jamie Comish rushed up the right side and blasted a shot which rang off the iron behind Watson. After the shot, Cornish got tan- gled up with Watson and the fans screamed for goalie interference. A few moments earlier, at the other end of the rink, Kints was ran into. The second period became very intense and the Irish almost had a three -goal cushion as rookie George Stephen had a big hole to shoot at but Kints got his glove out. With 8:53 left in the middle frame, the Hawks got on the board when speedy second -year forward Mark Livermore burst up the mid- dle and was hit by a long pin -point pass from captain Scan McCann. Watson didn't have a chance. The Irish regained their two -goal margin when Exeter's Chris Ken- nedy went to the box for roughing after the whistle and Darryl Boshart scored what proved to be the game winning goal. With the faceoff to the left of Kints, DePrest drew it back to Bryan Steifel who let go with a hard shot which was redirected by Boshart. DePrest and the Irish couldn't agree on some things earlier this year and so the overage centre took some time off. "He's back full time," said Bogart of DePrest. "They're (players) hap- py to have him back." Lucan fans came to life in a big way late in the third period fust be- fore the Hawks pulled to within a goal when Steifel, who has been very physical the past couple of weeks, hammered Steve Farquhar into the boards. McCann had an open net to shoot at as Watson was way out of the cage and for a while the momentum switched to the visitors who closed the gap to 3-2. It was the second straight win for the Irish who arc still in Inst place in the nine -team west division. However, Bogart said his players were happy. "I don't think they realized who they beat," he said of the Irish tak- ing a win away from the Hawks who have been challenging for top spot all season. "They were more happy just to win," he added. "We've got lots of work to do but we're showing signs (of improve- ment)," noted Bogart. Late in the second period, Exeter defenseman Joel Campbell went in hard into the boards. He suffered a severely broken ankle 'and spent a couple of days in the hospital. Revington said he expects the two-time Junior 'B' all-star re- arguard to be out for the rest of the season.
