Closing the
file on the
Panthers
In the bottom left hand drawer
of my desk is where I keep my
current files. You know, clip-
pings, etc. of things that are go-
ing on in sports.
Before I close this year's
South Huron girls field hockey
file, I thought it would be ap-
propriate to jot down a few
things that are contained in this
file.
Let's see, 1994 South Huron
District High School Panthers
girls field hockey team, nothing
really surprising. They won
again, and have a good chance
of winning it all in 1995.
Panthers three -peat reads the
headline in the Times -Advocate
on November 9. The photo has
the best team in the province
screaming in victory in King-
ston.
And just how does Jim Work-
man do it year after year? Part of
coaching you must realize is re-
cruiting. Finding a half a dozen
grade nine students each year
who don't mind sitting on the
ground for t months watching
those with more experience get
their time. -
I have to salute those grade
nine girls because they are pa-
tient. Danielle Miners, Cara
Gardner, Preslee Maver, Kim
Farquhar,...they all had to sit on
the blanket.
My file from 1994 contains a
lot of clippings not only from
the T -A but other papers as well
including the Kingston Whig -
Standard where the girls made
headlines.
For some reason I like to keep
statistics on the teams I cover.
The most astonishing bit of triv-
ia is that in the three years that
they have won three straight OF -
SAA titles, the Panthers have a,
are you ready for this, a 91-3-11
record.
Without a doubt, without
checking through the archives of
the T -A, I'm going to go out on
a limb here and say in the entire
history of sports in Exeter, that
is the best record over a three-
year period.
Next fall, when Lori Richard-
son and the others are getting a
little more playing time and
someone else is taking her fa-
miliar spot on the blanket, those
grade niners will be thinking
about the tradition that lives on.
From the sidelines: In the lo-
cal junior 'B' hockey league,
they are having coaches make
comments about the referees
right after the game on an eval-
uation form. I don't know how
this will work.
Referees are hard to come by,
Mike Arts was recently in,my
office to say hello and he is no
longer wearing the zebra shirt.
It's too bad because he was a
good one. By the way, Mike
says brother Les is doing fine
playing hockey over in Europe.
Anyway, analysing referees
immediately after the game is
not good because coaches, es-
pecially those who aro on the
losing side of the score, will
tend to put too much emotion
into it...

Exeter strikes double gold
Exeter Optimists defended their belle title at this year's tournament. Here are, fropt, Jana
Webster. Middle, left; Doug Miners, assistant coach; Heather Rideout, manager; Holly Zwaan,
Teresa Stire, Katie Armstrong, Chris Morgan, Amy Edwards, Ken Farquhar, coach. Back, left;
Heather Davies, Kim Farquhar, Danielle Miners, Katrina Brandt.
Belles defend their title
There were 21 teams in this year's fifth annual event
Danielle Miners scored
four goals including one
very quick in overtime
HENSALL - It was gold - solid gold for the Exet-
er and Area Ringette Association this past weekend.
Hosting their own annual tournament which was
held at both the Exeter and Hensall arenas, Exeter
won both the junior and belle divisions.
The belles edged Ajax in a very exciting see -saw
6-5 overtime goal which saw the hosts defend their
tournament title on what seemed to be a botched up
play.
Following a 5-5 regulation time draw, Exeter won
the flip and it took Danielle Miners just six seconds
to score. The play had several spectators wondering
just what coach Ken Farquhar was doing.
"What we do is place Heather (Davies) inside.
She lets the pass go through.her legs and then it's a
breakaway," said Farquhar.
The ring was sent through by Kim Farquhar and
instead of Davies picking it up, as no doubt ex-
pected by everyone, Miners got to the side of the
net and scored the winner on a pretty tough angle.
"It's a play we practice and we use it when there is
five or 10 seconds left in the game. It's worked be-
fore for us but never in a tournament," said Far-
quhar.
Exeter opened the scoring just three -and -a -half
minutes into the game as captain Amy Edwards
connected on a powerplay but Ajax's Michelle
Cooper tied it up.
It was nearly 2-1 for Ajax but Exeter goalie Jana
Webster stopped Carolyn Frizzle. On the play,
Webster got a lot of help from Farquhar who man-
aged to steer Frizzle away from the net.
There were a lot of penalties throughout the game
and Exeter took advantage of some of those early in
the third, although they fell behind 4-,i Miners tied
the score with 8A5 left to play in regulation.
With 4:43 left, Miners, who scored four of Exet-
er's six goals, stepped into the left circle and drilled
it. But Ajax's Cindy Schroeder tied it up which sent
the game into the 20 -minute sudden -victory over-
time period.
Ajax had a chance to win it in regulation when
Miners was sent off for body contact. Besides her
four goals, Edwards and Farquhar scored for the
winners while Cooper, Schroeder, Ann Judges, Lisa
Surcon and Brenda McBride answered for Ajax.
Earlier in the tournament, Exeter opened with an
8-6 win over Ajax as Miners had three with two
from Farquhar and singles to Davies, Edwards and
Katrina Brandt.
Exeter stumbled a little in the second game as
they were beaten 7-6 by Mitchell. In that one, Min-
ers had three, Davies netted a pair and Christie Mor-
gan had the other.
They went to the final after beating Stratford 6-3
on three from Miners, two by Morgan and one goal
from Davies.
Ajax advanced to the final after battling Stratford
to a 2-2 draw but then beating Mitchell 9-2.
Kim Farquhar of the Exeter belles trys to keep control of
the ring during Sunday aftemoon's game which saw Exeter
beat Ajax 6-5 in overtime.
Missy Hayter of the Exeter juniors kept her balance on
this play in the final against London. Exeter won the title.
Juniors go undefeated, win tournament
HENSALL - Trailing by a goal in
the second half, Exeter came back
to beat London /1 7-5 to take the
junior division of the Exeter and
Area Ringette Association's annual
tournament.
Although some of their games
were close, the Exeter juniors went
undefeated in all four games.
In the final, there were a lot of
penalties for both teams but it was
Tracy Wilson scoring first as Exet-
er had a quick lead. Missy Hayter
let go with a quick shot and it was
2-0. London's Kelly Austin con-
nected for London with 1:17 left in
the first half.
While the first half was fairly de-
fensive in nature, it was wide open
in the second portion of play as Ex-
eter scored five times and London
had four tallies.
Down by a goal, Shawna Rowe
let go with a backhander to tie it up
4-4 and mid -way through the sec-
ond period Exeter had a comfort-
able 6-4 lead.
Scoring for the winners were
Rowe, Wilson and Sarah Hamilton
Exeter Optimists won the Junior division of their own tournament on the weekend. Here are,

leen Chappel, Kely Clrayn►an, Sarah Hamilton, Kely Regier, coaches Leroy Edwards and Sue

all with two each while Hayter had
the other goal. For London, Austin
netted three with singles from Kris-
tine Lange and Amanda Summer-
ville.
Exeter opened the three-day tour-
nament with a slim 9-8 win over
Mitchell which saw Wilson score
three goals with two each from
Hayter, Hamilton and Rowe.
That was followed up with a 6-4
win over London 11 which saw
Rowe fire the hat trick, Hayter
score twice and Wilson netted the
other goal.
The third preliminary game saw
Exeter easily get by London 12 10-
2 on three goals from Rowe, two
goals and a pair of assists by
Hayter, and one each from Wilson
and Preslee Maver.
Fifth annual: This was the fifth
annual Exeter and' Area Ringette
Association tournament and pres-
ident Michelle Hodgert said it is the
biggest one in the Huron -Perth
league area.
"There were some teams a little
stronger than others but it was good
ringette," said Hodgert.
As with all tournaments, it takes
another team of volunteers to keep
things ,running smoothly, that is
particularly hard when two arenas
in two different communities are
being used. •
"It was a good tournament. There
were a lot of good comments," said
Hodgert.
While Exeter won two of the four
divisions, they were still com-
petitive in all three of the others.
In the tween division. Exeter
opened with a 9-2 loss to Forest as
Pam Keys and Alicia Lawrence
scored for Exeter. It was a closer 7-
6 victory in favour of Walkerton
which saw Keys give Exeter a big
lift as she notched four in a row.
Sarah Webber and Lawrence also
scored in that one.
Forest won the tween final, 5-1
over ooderich.
The hosts had two teams in the
petite division and the Exeter #1
team managed to reach the consola-
tion final where they were beaten
7-2 by Seaforth. Krista Dayman
had both Exeter goals.
Dayman had the lone goal in a 5-
1 loss to Paris and Robyn Ethering-
ton scored as Exeter blanked
Mitchell 1-0 and lost 7-0 to Chat-
ham.
Exeter 12 were beaten 11-6 by
Seaforth as Kerri Fulton had three
goals for Exeter with two from Kel-
ly Miners and ono by Heather Mor-
gan, They lost 9-2 to Chatham
while dropping a 3-0 decision to
Mitchell.
Chatham who went undefeated in
the tournament beat Paris 7-0 in the
final.
