Senior hoopers downed in semis by Viks 21-16
By Fred Groves
T -A staff
EXETER - At least five times
during Friday's game, the South
Huron Panthers were fouled while
going to the hoop. Unfortunately
they weren't given the trip to the
line as coach Terry O'Rourke ex-
pected.
While you can't depend on get-
ting the right calls from the of-
ficials, in this case, five trips to the
line could have resulted in 10 more
points the Panthers could have used
for sure.
The final result was a 22-17 win
for the visiting Godcrich Vikings in
Huron Conference senior girls bas-
ketball semi-final action. South Hu-
ron finished tied for first in the
five -team league after beating Ma-
dill 34-27 last Wednesday.
The Panthers, however, lost the
flip, pitting them against the third
place Vikings while Scafonh, the
other top team went against the
Central Huron Redmen.
During the regular season, the
Panthers beat the Vikings twice but
couldn't make it three straight.
"We knew it was going to be
tough," said O'Rourke. It's going to
he tough to beat a good team three
times."
During the regular season, South
Huron won 37-26 and a closer 25-
23 back on October 31 in Exeter.
Friday against the Vikings, the
visitors worked the ball patiently
for a whole minute at the start of
the game before they got a couple
of shots away.
They didn't score but South Hu-
ron's Candace Miller did, putting
the hosts in front briefly. Guard
Heather Davies, coming off of an
injury, had two aggressive steals in
the first quarter, scoring on one

them. •
"Heather played well. Candace
had one of her better games. They
all tried real hard," said O'Rourke.
The low scoring game saw the
Vikings take a one -basket, 9-7 lead
at the end of the first eight minutes.
In the second half, the closest the
Panthers could liet came early in
the second quarter when Davies
went to the hoop was fouled very
heavily but the ball still dropped
through the net.
Kerri-Lynn Case hit a foul shot
with 14 seconds left in the first half

er, left; controls the ball dur-
ing last Wednesday's semi-
final game against Goderich.

and the Panthers were trailing by
four, 16-14.
Friday's game was the lowest of-
fensive production, except for a
tournament game, 'by the Panthers
as they just couldn't get things go-
ing.
"We've had trouble with offence
all year. It's a lack of experience,"
said O'Rourke.
South Huron narrowed the gap
three minutes into the third quarter.
On an inbounds play, Miller was
fouled, and going to the line, made
both to make the score a slim 16-14
lead for the Vikings.
Goderich couldn't get their of-
fence going in the third, although
they had a lot more chances. Miller,
Tara Pepper and Chrissy McInnes
were there to grab some key de-
fensive rebounds.
The fourth quarter was very de-
fensive as both teams could only
manage one basket. Davies, who
led the hosts with six points, drove
to the hoop mid -way through the
quarter.
O'Rourke is looking at a re-
building year for next fall as he los-
es four starters and seven of the 13
players he had this yeti..

STRATFORD- The future looks
good for the South Huron District
High School boys volleyball pro-
gram as the junior Panthers trav-
elled to Stratford on Thursday
where they managed to make it as
far as the semi-finals of the Huron-
Pcrth finals.
"They did better than what we an-
ticipated at the beginning of the
season," said coach Scott Hal -
penny.
The juniors were eliminated in
the semis by Goderich after beating
Stratford Northwestern and Clin-
ton's Central Huron while losing to
Stratford Central in pool play.
In the final, Wingham's F.E. Ma-
dill Mustangs won the title as they
beat the Goderich Vikings.
"It says a lot," said Halpenny of
the success of the Huron county
schools. "Volleyball is improving
in our county."
Senior action saw the defending
champion Panthers not make it out
of pool play as they missed ad-
vancing by a single point. Stratford
Central beat Stratford St. Mike's to
win the final.
Tough start in London
LONDON - It was a tough way
to start the high school hockey sea-
son for the South Huron District
High School Panthers.
Travelling to London for the
Clarke Road Early Bird Tourna-
ment the Panthers lost both of their
games.
On Thursday they opened with a
3-1 loss to the host Trojans as Ryan
Shantz had the lone goal for South
Huron.
"It was 1-1 going into the third
period and they got two on give-
aways in our end," said Panthers
coach Dave Cox. •
The second garne saw Beal play a
very physical game and they
topped South Huron 7-1. Blair
Moir had the Panthers goal.
"We're small and won't be suc-
cessful if we play like that," said
Cox of his team which tried to play
as physical as their opponent.
Yesterday the Panthers host Lon-
don's John Paul II in an exhibition
game and will be at Silverwood's
Arena to take on the same team on
Friday.
The Panthers open their Huron
Conference schedule on November
29 when they host Goderich Vi-
kings at 2 p.m.
