Don Carey gets
his black belt in
front of family
EXETER - On October 15, Tyndall's Karate School had the hon-
our of presenting Don Carey of Mt. Carmel with his shodan black
belt.
There were eight black belts in attendance for the presentation as
well as his family, students and numerous visitors.
The ceremony was traditional with saki served by a geisha girl to
the black belts and the newest member of the prestigious title of sen-
sei.
Swords were drawn by all. A special one was presented to Sensei
Don Carey by Sensei Ron Tyndall from all the students. The sword
is a samaurai and is symbolic of his new position in the world of
martial arts.
When asked how he felt about receiving his black belt, Carey said,
"I worked hard to reach this milestone. In karate you earn what you
get. I am proud of what I have accomplished and am honoured to be
a sensei in an organization as prestigious and steeped in tradition as
the Butoku Kai is."
Carey first gained his interest in martial arts when he was a teen-
ager and watched Bruce Lcc in the TV series, the Green Hornet.
It took Carey eight years to earn his black belt.

just wasn't good enough as they
were beaten 9-5.
Wednesday, the Hawks, who are
also struggling to regain their form
of the past two years, took a quick
2-0 lead less than eight minutes
into the game.
It was 3-0 as the visitors scored
just 15 seconds apart which saw
Watson leave the ice in favour of
rookie Jason Glavin.
The third period saw the Hawks
score just 23 seconds apart. Lead-
ing thc Mitchell scoring attack was
former Exeter Hawk Jon Schiedcl
with four goals.
"That's what has happened all
season so far," said Bogart of hav-
ing quick goals scored against his
club. "They know what to do, its
just a matter of putting their minds
to it."
In support of Glavin, thc Irish got
one back when Steve Hudson
caught the Mitchell goalie way out
of the net and it was 4-1 after 20
minutes as a wraparound got over
Glavin's shoulder.
The Irish came out flying in the
second frame as Travis Stinch-
combe neued his fourth of the sea-
son. Glavin had to come up big just
eight seconds into the period with a
big glove save.
"They were moving the puck and
they were hitting. The first period
we weren't even close to being in
it," said Bogart.
Still in the fourth, the Irish nar-
rowed the gap as Dan Irvine, a for-
mer Exeter Hawk, playing_ in his
first game for Lucan, went to the
front of the net and converted a
pass from Christian Cricl.
It was a two -goal difference at
the end of 40 minutes as Dave
Jenken picked the puck up off the
boards and lofted it towards the
Mitchell goal. It took a very funny
bounce and the score was 6-4.
Mitchell came out quick in the
third as they scored three more to
collect just their fifth win of the
season.
Lucan rookie rearguard Bryan
Stciffel had a good game on
Wednesday as the big defenscman
gave out several hard hits.
"The size of our defense, we
don't play physical enough," said
Bogart who was pleased with Stcif-
fel's effort.
