EXETER - Following Parent -teacher interviews on
Thursday, November 3, the P.T.S. (Parent -Teacher -
School) Council held an information session for par-
ents. Sharon Abel, Public Health Nurse, distributed a
handout entitled "Surviving Adolescence" and in-
formed parents that an information network for people
interested in starting a Youth Centre for Exeter and
area teenagers will be held in Brussels on November
23.
English department head Pat Gibbings discussed the
results of last years Grade nine reading and writing
tests. Gibbins reminded everyone that these tests are
not standardized. The results are used by the Ministry
of Education to see if students are performing at a level
they believe to be acceptable. Testing for current

GODERICH - Of the 32 coun-
cillors who go to Huron County
Council, quite a few of them will
come to their last session in Gode-
rich on Thursday, November 23.
While the municipal election is
on Monday, the new council does
not take over until December 6, the
inaugural session for new incoming
warden Bruce Machan of Wing -
ham.
Machan is being acclaimed the
warden so far but that could change
if someone makes a nomination on
December 6, however, that is high-
ly unlikely.
Among those who will be leaving
are Exeter's Lossy Fuller, Zurich's
Bob Fisher, Tom Tomes from Ste-
phen Township, Stanley Town-
ship's Howard Armstrong, John
Doherty from Goderich, Bee Cooke
from Clinton, Blyth's David Lee,
Ernie Snell of East Wawanosh and
Doug Fraser from Moms Town-
ship.
Also, either Murray Keys or Li-
onel Wilder of Hay Township will
be giving up their seat. Wilder, the
current reeve is being challenged in
the November 14 municipal elec-
tion by Keys, now the deputy -
Under the county's new structure,
the size of council is being down-
sized from 32 to 26 which means
the six, larger municipalities will
only have one representative, the
reeve, instead of two.
"1t will save some money, I sup-
pose, not a lot," said outgoing war-
den Allan Gibson who seeks re-
election in Ashfield Township.
Gibson has been busy the last 12
months and on Thursday said,
"there arc some projects that have
been started that won't be finished
(in his term) like the redevelopment
of Huronview and 911."
Leaving polities: While Fuller
won't be back because she is vying
for thc mayor's chair in Exctcr and
Tomes is stepping down to deputy -
reeve in Stephen and looking to-
wards a political career, Armstrong
has simply had enough.
"I have mct a lot of good people,
most of them arc the same ones,"
Ii said of county councillors who -
have, along with hitnsclf, served
two terms for Huron County.
A year ago he challenged Gibson
and Maric Hickncll for thc war-
den's scat. Hickncll is not taking on
Machan next month.
"It's a choice 1 made personally,"
said Armstrong of why he is leav-
ing politics. "I've been a member in
Stanley fur 14 years (the past six as
reeve)."
As far as downsizing is' con-
cerned, Armstrong doesn't fully
agree with Gibson on the cost shar-
ing measures of having less people
at county council.
"I have mixed feelings about it.
don't know the dollars savings will
he that great," said Armstrong.
Huron County basically took the
stand they had to downsize or the
provincial government would tell
them when and how to go about it.
"Huron County was wise to face
this issue before someone made it
for us," said Gibson. 1 t

and Student Council representatives were on hand to
outline their functions. The G.S.T. is a peer support
group whose function it is to make the transition for
Grade eight students into high school as smooth as pos-

Last on the P.T.S. agenda was an introduction to
South Huron's new principal, Herb Murphy. He dis-
cussed the importance of parental interest and support.
He emphasized that the P.T.S. Council is an organiza-
tion that will eventually become a Ministry -required
advisory committee for the school. Parents are encour-
aged to take an active role in P.T.S. sponsored events.
