Tips for your home
Lighting
• Turn off the lights when leav-
ing a room - even for a few min-
utes. 1t saves more energy in the
time they're off than 11 will use to
turn there on again.
• Because brightly coloured
walls reflect light, they help save
energy, and require lower -
wattage hulks to achieve opti-
mum brightness.
• Replace standard incandes-
cent bulbs (40, 60, 100 and 150
watts) with energy saving hulks
(34, 52, 90 and 135 watts) with
no appreciable difference in
light.
• Switch to halogen bulbs for
spot and flood lights. They con-
sume 40 percent less energy and
last twice as long as regular
bulbs.
• Use compact fluorescent
bulbs for lights that are on more
than three hours a day and are in
hard -to -reach fixtures. They con-
sume 70 percent less energy and
last nearly 10 times as long as or-
dinary fluorescents.
Heating and hot water
• Permanently lowering the
thermostat one degree can save
up to four percent on heating
bills. For energy-efficient com-
fort, set it at 21 °C when awake,
18 °C when asleep.
• Keep heat in and cold air out
by caulking and weatherstripping
around doors and windows. They
reduce drafts and increase com-
fort.
• Use energy-saving shower
heads and save 30 percent in hot
water.
• Wrap your water heater in an
insulating blanket, and insulate
the first two metres of hot water
piping from your water heater to
reduce heat Toss.
Cooking and Cleaning
• When purchasing major ap-
pliances, compare Enertiuide la-
bels and choose those with the
lowest number of kilowatt hours
rating. Because an appliance lasts
a long time, small differences in
Energuidc ratings add up to large
savings.
• Refrigerators and freezers
should he kept clean, kept only 2/
3 full. and for maximum energy
savings, set at 3°C and -18°C re-
spectively.
• On the stove, match the pot
size to the element size and keep
lid, on to conserve energy. Al-
though more expensive at the
outset, a self-cleaning oven is
better insulated than a regular
one, and consumes less energy
during normal use.
• Use the "econo-wash" cycle
on the dishwasher and the "ener-
gy -saver" switch to turn off the
heating element, thus allowing
dishes to air dry. Wash only
when you've got a full load.
• Wash only a full load in the
clothes washer, rinse in cold wa-
ter, and run the spin cycle twice
before placing clothes in dryer.
• In the dryer, use the "cool -
down" feature to reduce the heat
in the last five to ten minutes,
and clean the lint filter after each
load.
Beavers planning
SkyDome sleepover
TORONTO - Move over Jays -
10,000 Ontario Beavers and Bea-
ver leaders are planning to take
over the SkyDome, to make it - for
the night of Saturday/Sunday, No-
vember 26, - the largest Beaver
Colony in the world.
Calling it - what else - the Sky -
Dome Sleep -over, they will be
coming from every Scouting re-
gion in Ontario, - some flying in,
some coming by train, others char-
tering busses, all of them excited
already about just being there.
"It's once in a lifetime", said one
leader.
While they're planning how to
get to SkyDome, a planning com-
mittee have been working for near-
ly two years on the logistics of ar-
rivals and departures, lunch,
supper and hrcakfast, afternoon
and evening programs, and making
sure there's a place to sleep for
every Beaver.
Lunch, supper and breakfast
means negotiations with McDo-
nalds who operate food services
within the Dome. McDonald's ex-
pects to be able to accommodate
everyone, including those who
have special needs, with minimum
line-ups.
Afternoon and evening programs
means contracting featured chil-
dren's entertainers Eric Nagler,
Jack Pearce, Lenny Graff, and
• Ronno and friends; arranging for
4 programming on the Jurnbotron,
for Fitness Breaks with televi-
sion's Body Break, and for G. J.
► Birdie to be there; contracting
huskers who will entertain arrivals
and departures and as walkabout
entertainers, and lining up an oth-
erwise full program of scheduled
4
and drop-in activities.
And because it's a birthday,
there will he a birthday Mehra -
lion. The SkyDome Sleepovcr is
the major event celebrating the
20th anniversary of the introduc-
• tion of the Bcavcr program to
' Scouting in Ontario. 'Beaming'
' first colonized Manitoba in the ear-
• ly 70s, then was introduced in On-
tario in 1974, the Beavers - age
five to seven - multiplying from
less than 100 in pilot groups in To-
ronto. Kitchener -Waterloo and Pe-
terborough, to over 33,000 in Onta-
rio in 1994. Nationally, Beavers
arc the largest of the five program
sections in Scouts Canada.
Ontario planners picked up the
4 idea from Beavers in British Co-
• lumhia, who staged a similar event
in Vancouver five years ago. I.il

A well prepared resume will help you
get the job you are looking for!
4
A resume detailing an applicant's work history and
education is extremely helpful to an employer who
is seeking a person for a specific job vacancy.
Your personal resume should accompany
your letter of application.
Here are some guidelines to follow in preparing your resume:
❑ Make it clear, concise and easy to read - and no longer
than two pages
O The resume should be typed on 8 1/2" x 11" white paper
with enough white space to prevent a cluttered look
❑ Start with your name, address and phone number'
O Next under a sub -heading "Work History" detail the
previous jobs you've held - in reverse date order
- that is, last job first.
O Use a separate paragraph for each position and
precede it with the dates you held that position.
O State the job title, a brief description of the
responsibilities - and the results you achieved.
O The next section of your resume should come under the
sub -heading of "Education". Start with the highest
degree obtained or grade completed, followed by the
name of the institution at which you studied. Follow
this with previous education attainments. At the end,
List any specific instructional courses you have
attended in conjunction with your work.
❑ Under the sub -heading "Affiliations", list memberships
and/or offices held in professional or industry
associations.
O Under the sub -heading "Personal Interests" list any
activities which you feel will be of interest to the
employer - such as volunteer work, etc.
Your letter of application and your resume will be the
factors that make the employer decide whether to short
Ilst you for an interview. So make It as Impressive
as you can - but stick to the facts.
We can help you get an impressive and
professional -looking resume
