Times Advocate, 1994-11-9, Page 22Page 22 Times -Advocate, November 9, 1994 Police called to Zurich Arena to stop fan fights Things got a little out of hand on Saturday at a hockey tournament ZURICH - It was a very, very interesting bantam -midget hockey tournament in Zurich on the weekend. While winners were declared in the two divisions, it appears as though all the action took place off of the ice. At about 10:30 p.m. Saturday, the Ontario Provincial Police were called to the Babe Siebert Memorial Arena in Zurich and in- vestigated a complaint of a Zurich fan who reached into the playing surface and punched a Thedford player. Fans from both teams became involved and the Exeter OPP report that charges are pending further investigation. Also, on Sunday, referee officials had to be called to the arena to monitor constant complaints by one of the coaches from Dorchester. On the ice, Lucan beat Dorchester 3-2 to win the bantam 'A' title in the six -team division while the 'B' was won by Stephen Town- ship. Stephen opened the tournament with a 2-0 win over Ilderton as Ben Glavin had the shutout in net while John Rutten and Jeff Glover scored. While Andy Ellis scored the lone goal in a 4-1 los to Dorchester, Stephen bounced back and beat Parkhill 7-3 to win the 'B' final. Rut - ten and Ben McCann led the way with two tallies each with singles from Christian Stuckless, Chris Reaburn and Ian Becker. Rutten had a good tournament as he added a pair of assists in the final while Stuckless, and Glover also set up two goals each. In the midget 'A' final Ilderton beat Thedford 5-3. There were three of the six teams all tied with a win and a loss each and Zurich was the odd team out as they did not advance. Zurich Thunder lost 5-3 to Lucan in overtime in their opener as Allan Jeffrey, Jarrett Jeffrey and Richard Masse scored for Zurich while Kris Hanlon and Kurt Hardy each had two for the winners with the other from Mike Bowerman. In their second game, Zurich beat Thedford 4-3 as Jarrett Jeffrey, Brian Dcnomme, Greg Masse and Ray Beierling scored for Zurich. Lucan lost 5-2 to Thedford as Hardy and Hanlon scored before bowing 4-1 to Blyth in the 'B' final. Josh Appleman teamed with Hanlon for the lone goal in the final. The referee had to bring order between Parkhill's Ryan Ma- guire, left; and Zurich's Jason Becker in the opening ban- tam game Friday night at the Zurich tournament. Arena to come alive this weekend 24 teams will be in town for the annual Bill Batten Tournament EXETER - Hundreds of hockey players from Southwestern On- tario will be in Exeter this weekend for the fifth annual Bill Batten Memorial Hockey Tournament. Beginning Friday night at 6:30 p.m., Exeter Minor Hockey As- sociation will host their huge 24 -team, three division tournament. First game will see Exeter Novice Waxers take on Mitchell followed by Exeter Atom Broncos against Stephen Township. In the peewee division, the first game goes at 9 p.m. on Friday as the Exeter Peewee Legions take on Seaforth. Championship games are set for the following times: Novice 'B' - 1:45 p.m.; Atom 'B' - 3 p.m.; Peewee 'B' - 4:15 p.m; Novice 'A' - 5:30 p.m.; Atom 'A' - 6:45 p.m.; Peewee 'A' - 8 p.m. Of the 30 total games, all but four of those will be played in Exet- er, the others will be at the Stephen Township Arena in Huron Park. Stephen Township captured the Novice 'A' in a slim 3-2 win over Lambeth and Exeter Legion won the Peewee 'B' in a 4-0 blanking over Lucan. At this time of the year deer are just entering a period known as the rut. This is a good time to observe them. The behaviour of white-tailed deer is driven by the endless cy- cle of the seasons. Breeding takes place in the fall, and is a fascinat- ing example one of nature's sea- sonal strategics to ensure a healthy, dynamic herd. Early summer is the most social time of year for deer, who by na- ture are very unsociable animals. Bucks or male deer often form loose associations called "buck groups" at this time of year. The members of these groups are usu- ally unrelated and may include a few yearling does. Immature bucks will give way to mature males but there is little open con- flict. Mutual grooming may even take place. These groups are rare- ly observed by even the most ded- icated naturalist. By early Sep- tember, the does leave the puck Ism= e deer groups. and the mating season or "rut" begins in earnest. M the hours of daylight short- en, the physiology of the buck be- gins to change. The soft skin called "velvet" covering the ant- lers dries up and begins to slough off. To speed up the process, the buck rubs the antlers against shrubs and small trees. At the same time, sap stains the antlers their familiar brown colour. Now when bucks encounter one an- other, they may engage in a "spar- ring" contest. The contestants walk toward each other with a stiff legged gait, touch antlers, us on the buck and engage in a pushing contest. The purpose is to establish an order of dominance from strongest to weakest. Most sparring is done by yearlings and two year olds who arc unsure of their position. By late October, the courtship phase begins. Sparring declines and hocks become v fry solitary. While daylight or "photo period" trig- gered the sparring stage, increases in the hormone testosterone causes changes in the buck during this stage. The neck of the buck swells and scent glands on the legs and forehead become more active. A buck will rub his antlers against a small tree and remove the bark from about 30 cm to 1 meter from the base of the trunk. The glands on the forehead leave a scent. Other bucks and nearby does encounter- ing these "rubs" will sniff this scent and may rub their forehead leaving their own scent.' Bucks begin to follow does dur- ing this time. By running away, the doe will rarely allow the buck to get closer than about 50 meters un- til she reaches the receptive phase of her own cycle. When the doe is about to become receptive, the Kuck often stands be- side her with his chin over her hindquarters. After mating, the buck may stay with the doe for several hours to keep other bucks away. Shortly afterward, the buck leaves the doe and has no role in rearing the young. In any given herd, usually only the most dominant bucks breed with the does, thus ensuring the best genes arc passed on to the next generation of fawns.
