While the extra time up on the clock isn't wearing the team down, a rash of injuries to some key players is slowing the OHA Junior Development Lcague team down just a little. Friday night they salvaged a 3-3 overtime tic with the Lambeth Lancers. The night before in Mt. Brydges they beat the Bulldogs 4-3 in overtime. Saturday, in their third game in as many nights, yes, it was overtime again however, this time it was the hosting North Middlesex Stars win- ning 4-3. The win and tie improved the Hawks record to 8-4-1 for 17 points, just one behind the west di- vision leading Port Stanley Lakers. Exeter has a bit of a break as they don't see action again until Sunday when they travel to Seaforth to take on the Centennaires. When asked if the overtime was hurting his team, Exeter coach Dave Revington said, "no it's only two or three shifts. We've come from behind in all of them and that's positive." In the first four overtime games, Exeter was trailing late in the regu- lation time and came back to force Junior `D' hockey Rookie Mark Bell played well in Friday's Junior 'D' game against Lambeth. Here he dishes out a hit behind the net. Meeting between coaches and executive encouraging The Lucan Irish are taking steps to get back on track and find their first win By Fred Groves T -A staff LUCAN - When the Lucan Irish coaching staff met with the OHA Junior Development League team's executive last Wednesday, neither group knew what was going to be the final outcome of the meeting. What was accomplished was a positive re -enforcement which will hopefully be the first step to getting the Irish back on the win- ning side of the scoreboard. Heading into tonight's game in Lucan against the Mitchell Hawks, the Irish are in last place in the west division with an 0-9- 1 record. They've had a nine -day break and not only has their been a meeting but the Irish an- nounced Thursday night that they have signed former Exeter Hawks forward Dan Irvine. "After a slow start and the rep- utation, there was some cause for concern," said Irish manager Pat Ryan to why the meeting was held. "They (executive) un- derstand we have a young team and it will take time to jell." Ryan said the executive is in full support of the coaching staff which includes Ryan and coach- es Scott Bogart, Jeff Dalrymple and Mark Bannon. Looking into the very near fu- ture, Ryan said the arrival of Ir- vine will help a team which has good goaltending and a defence which can stop the goals from going in. "He's (Irvine) going to give us a hand and Scott Riddell will be back. The Greg DePrest situa- tion will be looked at," said Ryan. Riddell is injured and he brings a spark both on and off the ice to the club that finished sec- ond behind defending champion Mitchell last year. DePrest, the team's top scorer, and the Irish parted ways in a mutual under- standing. Few big losses: Analysing the Irish, of the nine games they've lost, three of those have been by just one goal. They are in the games but just can't finish off at the end. "Our captain (Steve Matthews) has stated the team morale is still high," said Ryan. Irish president Gary Wilcox said the reason the meeting was set up was to stop a few cir- culating rumours and, to let the coaching staff know they are do- ing a good job. "We expressed confidence in them," said Wilcox. "They are working hard and it's going to come. We're not that far away," he said of breaking out of the slump. Usually when a team is winless in their first ten games (a quarter of the season), and the executive and the coaches meet, it some- times means bad news for the coaches. This wasn't the case last Wednesday. "We just evaluated the season and want to see what we as an ex- ecutive can do to help," said Wil- cox. Around the Ieague...There are a few surprises around the Junior Development League this fall, primarily the play of a couple of teams. Belmont has changed its name back to the Bombers and they are sitting comfortable in the middle of the standings. Also im- proved are the North Middlesex Stars of Parkhill. What's wrong with the defending champs is what many want to know - they lost a lot of players from their past two provincial championship the five-minute sudden -death over- time period. Friday night at the South Huron Recreation Centre, the Hawks were down by two goals after 40 minutes but came back, scoring twice in the final frame. Exeter lacked two key players and three more were not playing to 100 percent of their capability. "We've got some key guys out with injures," said Revington. (Shayne) Robinson and Joel (Campbell) are out and it hurts the powerplay." Chris Kennedy was coming off a case of bronchitis while both Brian "We've got some key guys out with injuries and it hurts the powerplay." Gardner and Jason McBride have shoulder injuries but still managed to suit up on Friday. Sharp rookie: One of the most pleasant surprises the last couple of week's has been the outstanding performance of rookie winger Jeff Glavin. He assisted on the first goal Friday and the night before in Mt. Brydges, scored 'once and set up two others. "He could be our best forward in the last five games. He does some- thing you can't teach, he holds onto the puck," said Revington. Last year, Glavin captained the Stephen Township bantams to the Ontario Minor Hockey Association bantam 'E' title. With the Hawks, he has the capability to help out the veterans with the scoring. Trailing 2-0 with four minutes left to go in the second period on Friday, Glavin got the puck behind Lambeth goalie Jeff Baldacchino, centred it to Ray Cousineau who shot and then Nathan Bums jumped Exeter Hawks defenseman Bill Hodge, right; tries to steal the puck during Friday night's game. on the rebound. With goalie Chris Lyndon mak- ing some key saves m the third, Cousineau spun, shot and fired the puck between Batdacchino's legs, cutting the lead to one. With about seven minutes left in regulation, rookie Many DeBruyn backhanded the puck into the cor- ner to tie it up and eventually send it into overtime. Hawks 4, Bulldogs 3 Thursday night in ML Brydges, the visitors were trailing 3-1 after two periods but came back to win it and during the night scored three of their four goals on the powerplay. While veteran Mark Livermore netted the winner in overtime from Sean McCann and Ray Cousineau, Glavin had a goal and two assists while Cousineau scored twice, both on the powerplay.
