Thursday afternoon at the South Huron District High School, the senior boys volleyball team beat visiting Clinton Central Huron Red - men in two -of -three games in Hu- ron Conference action. On Thursday, thc Panthers, the defending Huron -Perth champions will head to Stratford Central for the H -P title and it looks as though they arc contenders to repeat. "There will be a lot of good teams there. Goderich will be a sur- prise team and Stratford Central is always good," said South Huron coach Joe Jankowski. The Panthers finished second in the Huron Conference behind the Goderich Vikings but the top four of five teams in the loop make the trip to Stratford. High school sports Thursday against the Redmen, the Panthers lost the opener 16-14, came back to take the second, 15- 11 and were somewhat more dom- inating in the third with a 15-9 vic- tory. Two strengths the defending champs possess- they hit the ball hard, although not always accurate, and they are very strong de- censivcly at the net. "We've got a couple of guys corn- ing off injuries and their timing is off," said Jankowski. One of those is veteran hitter De- nis McCann who twisted an ankle early in the year and missed part of the season. He is wearing a brace and on Thursday the injury seemed to be bothering him a little. McCann who likes to he about five feet back from the net when he cocks his arm, was either getting important points for the Panthers or putting the ball out of play. "Denis is a big hitter, hopefully he will have his tuning right for Huron -Perth," said Jankowski. Quick lead: In the third and dc- ciding, game against the Redmen on Thursday, South Huron's Dennis Welsh stumbled, got up and still got the ball over the net to give the hosts a very quick 3-0 lead. A kill by Many DeBruyn went out of bounds which turned posses- sion over but South Huron quickly got it back. With Welsh serving, they went up 8-0 before thc Red - men called a time out. The Panthers let their guard down a little bit, putting the killer instinct up on the shelf but the Redmen couldn't capitalize. When veteran Blake Schade, whose strength lies in setting more than hitting, let one go, the Panthers were in control again. Central Huron chipped away and cut the lead in half to 8-4. It be- came a sec -saw game and it quickly swung towards the Panthers when Del3ruyn and McAllister got up for a big block. Head to St. Mikes: In junior ac- tion on Thursday, South Huron opened with a 15-6 win over the Redmen but lost the second 15-9 and the deciding game 15-12. While the seniors will be at Strat- ford Central for Huron -Perth, the juniors will also be in the city for Huron -Perth as they finished sec- ond behind Wingham's F.E. Ma- dill...In other high school sports ac- tion, the girls volleyball teams, boys basketball and ice hockey will all be getting ready for their up- coming seasons. Despite loss, hoopers look to playoffs Midgets beat Seaforth, seniors, juniors come up short "We just kind of wore down at the end." By Fred Groves T -A staff EXETER - Sometimes the other team can figure out what you are going to do before you do it. That was the case last Wednes- day afternoon as the Seaforth Gold- ' en Bears came to town and handed the hosting out ron District. High Schodrssenr girls basketball team a 47-30 drubbing. It was only the second Huron Conference loss for the Panthers, and the first time they've lost to the Golden Bears. South Hun n scored just seven seconds into he game when Jen Romphf starter things off and al- though the Pan hers were trailing, managed to batt'e back and go up 21-18 at the half. The hosts looked as though they were in control early in the second half but Seaforth picked up the tem- po and built a 10 -point cushion with about three minutes left to play. "We just kind of wore down at the end," said South Huron coach Terry O'Rourke. "Once we started pressing we made some wrong choices on offence." Despite the Toss, the Panthers are enjoying a very successful season, and after they travel to Madill on Wednesday, they look forward to the playoffs. The top four teams in the five -team conference advance to post -season play. "I think we have as good a chance as any. There's not too much that separates Goderich, Sea - forth and ourselves," said O'Rourke. Rornphf jump-started the Pan- thers with a quick lead, and Chrissy McInnes, who finished with 12 points helped the Panthers build a 10-7 lead aftcr the first quarter. While McInnes had her sights ad- justed and ' wat5 popping shots in from all over the court, South Hu`•, ron once again got an outstanding effort from Tara Pepper who played well at both ends of the court. "She's been really steady all year," said O'Rourke of Pepper. Not only did Pepper grab several key rebounds, but she was there to set picks, dish off some nice passes and in general, provide the spark which will hopefully take the Pan- thers to the Huron Conference fi- nals. South Huron was without their point guard Heather Davies who is recuperating from surgery but is ex- pected back next week to take on Madill. ' In her place, Lisa Campbell stepped in and did a good job to keep the ball going against a prctty quick Golden Bears squad. Jen Romphf, (23), struggles to get to the ball in senior girls basketball action last week. Looking on is Tara Pepper (30). thers have got their sights focused on the Huron Conference title. Led by quick -passing Sue In- lakahana and high scoring Missy Hayter, this team could win it all. Wednesday, against the Golden Bears, the Panthers won 44-25 on 10 points from Hayter and eight from Meghan Pearson. Most interesting thing about this game was that coach Janice Waik- ecr was absent, so senior player Jen Romphf, filled in. Romphf had to leave for her own senior game, so she recruited volleyball coach Scott Halpenny to take over late in the game. Juniors come up short: Seaforth built a 26-14 lead at the half and easily won this one 49-29. ' While the Panthers had their mo- ments in which they worked hard, it seems as though they arc lacking the knowledge of executing the ba- sic fundamentals. Sara Szabo had 10 points for the hosts while Meagan Ratz added nine. ifZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ ' Rob Dale Motors Now Available OIL SKIN Oil Spray Dripless and Environmentally Safe Complete Protection for your car From $69.95 up Also regular oil spray from $44.95 Phone 2286810 Hwy. 4, Centralia ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ 0 0 a: l X 0 1)r RI CIII AR & FtArII) III A( K A u CHARITY S NOVEMBER 1 1. 12.
