The Middlesex study released
last Tuesday has two options for
Lucan and Biddulph. In one they
would be grouped with London
township and in the second, the
north half of West Nissouri town-
ship would he added.
About the Middlesex proposal,
Lucan reeve Tom McLaughlin said,
"I certainly believe we have to
change. The report clearly tells us
the status quo is not acceptable. I
am somewhat surprised at the ex-
tent of the preferred amalgamation,
which may make the findings a
"'hard sell" politically."
Biddulph reeve Earl French be-
lieves the report is very aggressive
and some people are going to see it
and reject it completely. He added,
"Some may look at other forms of
amalgamation. Hopefully, this will
spark some type of debate so we
can see there are alternatives. The
Friday morning residents were
entertained by Bert Bax of Clinton.
He plays the harmonica and the res-
ident were treated to a variety of
songs played on the mouth organ.

New start for
Cuckoo's Nest
LONDON - The Cuckoo's Nest
was founded in 1973, along the
lines qf. British folk clubs. Its aim
wast' tb bring top level folk''
music performers to London, as
well as to provide a focus and in-
spiration for folk music enthusiasts.
It ran for 10 years, meeting weekly
at Luther House at the university
gates, until other commitments on
the part of the organizers led to its
winding down.
During its life, it had a major ef-
fect on music in London. Two artis-
tic directors and one chairman of
Home County were founding mem-
bers; London's first morrfs team
was formed by members of the
club; two dance bands were formed
and many people were encouraged
to sing, play and perform by the
club's activities.
Such international names as Mar-
tin Carthy, Peter Bellamy, Tom
Paley, Jane Voss and Hoyle Os-
borne, Nancy White, Stan Rogers,
Alistair Anderson, The Boys of the
Lough, The Tannahill Weavers,
Battlefield Band, Dolores Keane,
and many others appeared on the
club's small stage.
This year, the Cuckoo's Nest is
restarting its activities. A concert
series has been organized for the
fall season, beginning with Scottish
singer Ed Miller, followed by Alis-
tair Brown, and the Friends of Fid-
dler's Green. All concerts will be
held at Chauccr's pub on Carling
Street.

In good standing as at Decem-
ber 31, 1993.
The intention is, however, to
have much more than just a concert
series. A membership fee will bring
discount4 at perfor4niftices, and fre-
quent background information
through a newsletter.
Regulars will he encouraged to
open for visiting performers. It is
anticipated that there will be many
spin offs from the concerts, just as
there was in the past. Taking Otta-
wa's Old Sod Folk Music Society,
and Midland's Mundy's Bay Folk
Club as their models, the Cuckoo's
Ncst will encourage a sense of be-
longing and that members arc more
than just audience, but can contrib-
ute too, if they wish.
The organizers say the time is
-ight for the club's renaissance, and
that there is a need for this kind of
participation in music once again.

Lucan-Biddulph amalgamation
plans are being put on hold
LUCAN - Amalgamation plans
between the village of Lucan and
the township of Biddulph have
been tabled until the proposed re-
structuring of Middlesex county is
studied further.
Councils of the two municipali-
ties met last Wednesday night to
discuss a study completed by con-
s,:!'ant Richard Chown of Bright's
Grove.
Although Chown recommended
amalgamation and reaction from
both councils was positive it was
agreed it would be practical to wait
until a county wide decision is
made.
Lucan and Biddulph already
share a number of services and
Chown's report indicated consider-
able savings would occur if the two
joined together.
Only recently Biddulph agreed to
allow Lucan to use their township
shed for the storage of winter salt
Queensway residents hold
monthly council meeting
HENSALL - At Queensway
Nursing Home the week started off
with their monthly Resident Coun-
cil meeting on Hallowe'en Mon-
day. At these monthly meetings,
residents hear about all events tak-
ing place in the building as well as
have an opportunity to voice any
concerns they have.
On Monday afternoon the women
of the Hensall United Church
brought their bingo program. Resi-
dents look forward to their weekly
bingo.
Tuesday afternoon Shirley Luther
performed the weekly church ser-
vice. Later in the evening the Chris-
tian Reformed Singers from Exeter
came for an evening of hymns and
readings.
Early Thursday morning, resi-
dents gathered for Breakfast Club.
All who attended enjoyed a hearty
breakfast of bacon, eggs, toast,
juice and coffee.
report goes farther than I had ex-
pected, but I don't want it shelved
as happened with a similar report in
1974."
The Middlesex report suggests
the county and its 21 municipalities
should reorganize into six or seven
new political units.
According to Chown's report
commissioned by the village, Lu -
can's population would rise from
its present figure of 1,845 to 2,924
by the year 2002 while Biddulph's
would drop from 2,194 to 2,063.
Any decisions to be made will be
up to the new councils which will
take over on December 1 of this
year. McLaughlin emphasized that
meetings will be called, likely early
in the new year to allow plenty of
input by the public.
