On Sunday, October 23, Flor- ence Hodgins from Centralia, ac- companied by Helen Lewis from Ailsa Craig visited her friend Vera Lewis at Chelsea Park Lodge in London. They celebrat- ed Vera's IOOth birthday with a turkey dinner and a reception.. UCW meetings will be held this week at Zion West Wednesday November 2 and at Centralia Thursday November 3 at 8 p.m. Ernie Miatello, a local pharma- cist, will be the guest speaker at Centralia. A special evening of music and worship will be held Sunday No- vember 6 at Thames Road United Church beginning at 7:10 p.rn. and the service follows at 7:30 p.m. The guest speaker will be P. Mitchell. The offering will be do- nated to the Exeter Food Bank. Many people from Centralia and Zion West travelled by bus and car to White Oaks United Church on Sunday October 30. A special presentation was held dur- ing the morning worship service for Heather Smith, a candidate for the ministry, with Rev. Nancy E. Harding presiding. After the ser- vice a reception was held in Heather's honour. Drinking and driving, possession, narcotics, assault charges EXETER - In Provincial Court in Exeter on October 25, Judge Vogelsang levied fines and a jail sentence on a numerous array of charges and a large number of charges were laid over until court dates in November and December. Over BAC limit George Cole of Grand Bend was sen- tenced to 14 days in jail after pleading guilty to a charge of operating a vehicle while his blood alco- hol content was over the prescribed limit of .80. Cole's vehicle was stopped by OPP officers at 8.05 p.m. on the evening of October 22, 1993 in Hay township after it was clocked at 122 kilometres per hour in a 100 kilometre zone. The officer noted a strong odour of alcohol on Cole's breath and a roadside breathalizer test registered a fail. After being taken to the Exeter OPP station, Cole's breathalizer readings were listed at 1.70 at 9.34 p.m. and 1.70 at 9.52 p.m. The accused had a previous conviction for impaired driving in Kitchener in May of 1992 and was fined $600 at that time. His driving privileges will be suspended for a period of 24 months. Fines for over .80, narcotics, possession Judge Vogelsang levied fines totalling $1,334 against Christo- pher Phillips of Hensall on three separate charges. A fine of $600 plus a surcharge of $89 was for operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol content over the specified limit. A vehicle driven by Phillips was stopped by police on Simcoe street in Exeter at 12.15 on July 3 of this year for speeding. On inspec- tion, police found the accused to have bloodshot and glassy eyes and a strong odour of alcohol on his breath. A further search re- vealed a cigarette with a black, oily substance and 17 grams of a narcotic in eight glass vials. Breathalizer tests at the Exeter OPP station at 1.27 a.m. and 1.48 a.m. registered readings of 1.60 each time. On the narcotics harge, Phillips was fined $300 and the surcharge was waived by Judge Vogelsang. A further charge of possession of goods valued at under $1,000 brought a fine of $300 plus a surcharge of $45. This charge involved a number of bronze pins used for engine manu- facturing which were missing from Exeter Machine Products at Huron Park. In a search of Phillips' apartment on July 8 police found three pins in a dresser drawer. The accused turned over another 200 pins to police on July 28 following advice from his counsel. Careless use of firearm Ross Francis of Usborne township was fined $50 for careless use of a firearm in what Judge Vogelsang described as an "un- fortunate series of events." The fine surcharge was waived. Francis was charged after he fired a shotgun over the heads of a number of worm pickers on his farm in Usborne at about 9.30 p.m. on April 12, 1994. The court was told that at that time, he heard noises outside and found his flock of 25 geese was very ag- itated and disturbed. The accused's solicitor Kim McLean revealed that Francis rais- es ducks and geese for breeding stock under a Wildlife Services Act licence and after seeing one of the worm pickers on top of a five foot fence, thought they were up to no good. After shouting for the invaders to get out, Francis fired a shot over their heads. It is alleged one pellet hit one of the worm pickers in the face, but McLean said no blood was found. McLean went on to say that Francis has lost a number of geese in the past and was concerned about further losses. The worm pickers did not have permission to be on his property. The lawyer also emphasized that Francis notified the police at 11.55 p.m. and was the only one to report the incident. The judge placed a ban on Francis owning a firearm for the next 12 months. The gun in question will be turned over by po- lice to his son Gerald Francis who has a Fire Arms Certificate. Fined for assault Jim McLeod of Centralia was fined $100 and a surcharge of $15 when he pleaded guiilty to a charge of assault arising from an incident during a minor baseball tournament on August 7 of this year. In a game between Centralia and Mitchell, McLeod's son Nick was called out at home plate followed by a run-in with the catch- er and a fight broke out. The accused is alleged to have struck John Miners in the face causing a bloody lip. C. Nelligan acting for the Crown said this was a criminal of- fence and was a terrible example to set for young people mostly at the age of 14 years. In setting the fine, Judge Vogelsang agreed saying, " Civilized fans and parents shouldn't act like this." Driving while under suspension Sirisack Phimsipason of Oshawa was fined a total of $862 and had his driving privileges suspended for 24 months after pleading guilty to a charge of operating a vheicle while his licence was disqualified. The accused was driving a vehicle on March 20, 1994 when it was stopped by an OPP Constable on general patrol on Highway 4 in Stephen townshship because ,t was travelling well below the speed limit. Through an interpreter Phimsipason said he was lost and had just taken over for another driver. He failed a roadside breathalizer test with a reading between .50 and 1.0 and was giv- en a 12 hour suspension. Phimsipason had his driving licence supsended for two years on March 22 of 1992. In going to a fine instead of a jail sentence Judge Vogelsang said the accused had not set out to drive the ve- hicle and had managed all but two days of his previous prohibi- tion. 'A r Woodcutters course set for November CLINTON - As you may already know, anyone cutting wood for sale must be certified under the Minis- try of Labour. This includes fire- wood for sale and for anyone cutting wood for their own use on lands owned by the Ontario Minis- try of Natural Resources. It is sur- prising to know that even a hired man must be certified for cutting wood on his employer's property for the use'of the employer. The Huron County Needs Identi- fication Committee, in determining what courses to offer in 1995, se- lected this course as one that would be needed by Huron County resi- dents. The Ontario Agricultural Train- ing Institute (OATI) has scheduled a workshop to certify woodcutters. Greg Pfaff, Educational Trainer with the Ausable-Bayfield Conser- vation Authority is the facilitator for this course. This three-day course involves some classroom, some workshop demonstration on adjustment, main- tenance and safety of chainsaws. There is a practical demonstration in the bush before certification is complete. Participants are asked to bring with them the following: chainsaw with fuel requirements, small tool box with screwdriver and file, safety equipment (ear and eye protection, safety boots, chain- saw pants or chaffes).
