SPORTS Times -Advocate, November 2, 1994 Page 21 Defence improves, Hawks top Lancers 5-1 Two wins, one in controversial overtime, and a Toss have Exeter's record at 7-3 By Fred Groves T -A staff LAMBETH - Goaltending may have been a concern a couple of weeks ago, but for now, the Exeter Hawks are pretty solid between the pipes. Sunday night in Lambeth, Hawks veteran goalie Chris Lyndon turned away 29 shots as Exeter skated to their seventh win m 10 starts, a 5-1 win over the Lancers. "We had good team defence, we closed down the neutral zone," said Hawks' coach Dave Revington. Two wins and a Toss last week have the Hawks still in a hunt for first -place in the OHA Junior De- velopment League's west division with a 7-3 record. Sunday, Exeter led 4-0 after the fust period as defenseman Jamie Cornish started the scoring just 1:31 into the game followed by a shorthanded marker by Mark Liver- more. With just 3:16 left in the opening frame, Ray Cousineau con - "The first period was probably the best period we've played this year." nected and two minutes later, Mark Lynn scored. "Thc first period was probably the best period we've played this year," said Revington. "Any puck that went in deep, our defence had more time to deal with the pressure," he added of the good job the forwards did in coming back to help out. While Lambeth's Kevin Kerr got one back in the second, Shayne Exeter rookie Jeff Glavin zoned in on Lambeth goalie lan during Friday night's game in Exeter. Burt but didn't score on this Robinson scored late in the third to give the Hawks the win. Exeter will look for their ninth win when they play a rare Thursday game in Mt. Brydges , Friday host Lambeth and conclude three straight nights of hockey when they go to Parkhill to take on North Middlesex on Saturday. What's the rule for overtime? Friday night in Exeter the visiting Belmont Bombers came to play and held a slim 5-4 lead at the end of two periods. With goalie Darren Kints out of the net for the extra attacker, Rob- inson scored the tieing goal with 26 seconds left to play to send the game into overtime.. Referee J.P. Zubec, under advise- ment from his linesmen, was told the game was a full five-minute overtime and not sudden -death. Ac- cording to league convener Wayne Smith, it is sudden -death. Nathan Bums rang a backhander off the post just 1:09 into the over- time and the Bombers failed to score the rest of the way. "It is (sudden -death) and that's what 1 told him (Zubec)," said Rev- ington. Scoring for the Hawks were Cor- nish with two, Gavin Snell with his second of the year, Robinson and Bums. • Exeter had a 3-1 lead but the Bombers battled back. It wasn't the best night for the Hawks as Cornish was given two penalties on the same play and Robinson missed a breakaway and a good opportunity in front of the net. Third loss: Last Wednesday night in Mitchell, the Hawks suf- fered their third Toss of the season and second in a row, an 8-5 pound- ing. Mitchell got a bit of a break from referee Steve Gould as he slapped Exeter with a penalty at the end of the first period for not staying on their bench at the buzzer and ,Mitchell scored on the powerplay. Scoring for Exeter were Rob - attempt inson with a pair, Greg Dalrymple, Bums and Cousincau. Celebration time came six times for the Hawks Friday night as they beat visiting Lambeth 6-5 in overtime. Middlesex, 8:15 p.m. No win in 10 games for struggling Irish By Fred Groves T -A staff LUCAN - Help wanted - some- one to put the puck in the net. Please apply to the Lucan Irish. The OHA Junior Development League's regular season is a quarter of the way finished and so far the Irish arc only scoring on an aver- age, 3.1 goals a game compared to last ycar when they scored 5.63 per game. In last place in the west division, the Irish have a winless 0-9-1 record and have a lot of regrouping to due until their next game, No- vember 9 when they host Mitchell. Gone from las: year's team arc Lucan has to find a top goal scorer Greg DcPrest who had 36 of the team's 225 1993-94 goals, Dwaync Price who netted 23, Steve Moore who had 20 and now Rob Davis who had 24 goals is shelved for the rest of this season. . "1 guess he's had shoulder prob- lems since minor hockey. He hurt it in Pt. Stanley and again at practice. It's time to get it fixed," said Irish coach Scott Bogart. Last Wednesday the Irish lost 4-3 to visiting Mt. Brydges Bulldogs, were in Mitchell on Friday where they were beaten 7-3 by the de - LUCKY CHARMS Steve Watson ... returns to the nets Big Meeting: While the Lucan Irish don't play again until November 9th, that doesn't mean things aren't happening. "We (coaching staff) have a meeting with the executive Wednesday night," said Irish manager Pat Ryan. Record after first 10 games: 0- 9-1 (only team in 18 -team league without a win.) Future games: Wednesday November 9 - Mitchell at Lucan, 8:15 p.m.; Sunday, November 13 - Lucan at Lambeth; 7:15 p.m. fending champion Hawks and then Saturday in North Middlesex were stung by the Stars 4-0. With the top four goal scorers from last year now out of the pic- ture, the Irish will have to depend on Christian Cricl and Steve Hud- son to put the puck in the net. "1 suspect they will carry most of it (offensive load). We expect some others to step their game up." While the Irish had to except the fact that Davis will not be back and rookie George Stephens could miss a few games due to injury, on a positive note Lucan has signed goalie Steve Watson and released Rob Hotson. "He (Hotson) phoned and packed it in himself. He has work and fam- ily commitments," said Bogart. Watson played in 24 games last year and had a 3.39 goals against average which was the fourth best in the west division last year. He made 35 saves on Wednesday and the four he let in, he didn't have much help on. "He played excellent, that's the kind of goaltending we need." While the Irish lack a forward who can get those 25 or 30 goals a year to lead the way, one thing they do have going for them is their speed. However, they don't seem to be using it at the right time. "We don't use it. Every time we drive to the net, something hap- pens. The name of the game is pres- sure and we're not doing it con- sistently," said Bogart who noted his team has to dump the puck more and go chase it. Another one goal loss: Fol- lowing a scoreless first period against the Bulldogs, the visitors went up 2-0 but rookies Darryl Bo- shart and Brent Mills did a lot of work to get it to Travis Stinch- combe to make it 2- l . Some of the speed Bogart talks about was used when Hudson burst clown the boards, went around the net and centcrd it to veteran Derek Greenlee who got his first of the ycar. The Irish went into the second in- termission up by a goal when de- fenseman Keith Robson drew two Bulldogs to him, got the puck over to Creel who snapped a shot to make it 3-2. But the final period belonged to the visitors as Shane Harrison tied it up and with 3:26 Icft to play, he set up Kevin Cunning with the win- ner. It was the fourth straight loss for the Irish but the players didn't seemed overly upset about it. "They don't seem to be taking it serious yet. It's frustrating for the coaches," said Bogart. Of their ten games this year, the Irish have lost three of those by just a single goal. UTO ©121 AECoauMONaaR wg HWY. #83 EXETER 235.3922F Lucan dWfncoman Brian Stelfel, right; got close to a Mt.
