Eightyear-oId is
a champion

CENTRALiA - Watching eight-year-old Harley Davis, you'd
think he has no fear.
Scarcy thing is, he does and he seems to respect it.
On a home-made dirt bike race track, just a few feet away from his
father Mike's motorcycle repair shop, Harley practices at what he
seems to be a natural at - jumping over hills on his motorcycle.
He recently won the Continental Motorsport Club's peewee class
point series as he beat other riders who were as old as 12 years -old.
"He ended up thc season with three first places, six seconds and
one fourth," explained Mike. "It (the fourth) would have been a first
but.he took a dive."
Harley races a 60 cc bike and sometimes he is in a race with the
bigger 80 cc bikes. Once in a while the bigger ones overtake him on
the track.
"I fell down when the 80's were coming up behind me," explained
Harley.
His final race was at Gopher Dunes in Courtland, near Tiltsonburg
but he and his dad have packed up the van, loaded the trailer and
been all over Southwestern Ontario.
Harley just turned eight in August and has four more years in the
peewee division and Mike hopes to have his son on the bigger 80 cc
bike in a couple of years.
"They are pretty fast and they're big and more powerful," said Har-
ley of the 80 cc bikes.
In Grade 3 at Usbome Public School, he has a couple of friends
who are quite interested in dirt bike racing. This past weekend was
Harley's final race of the season as he was off to Barrie for a benefit
race.
Another youngster broke his back and Harley and other racers are
getting together to help raise some money for their colleague.
Started young: And how slid Harley gct involved in racing at
such a very young age?
"Chris Lee (a friend) talked us into racing. I had a PW 80 a couple
of years ago and i took it over there and I was doing jumps," said
Harley of when he was riding at four years -old.
To watch him jump the small hills near his dads shop you know
he has got a future. Although he is only eight, he is very outspoken
about his passion and knbws already what his strengths and weak-
nesses are.
I'm pretty.good at thc starting gate. It's just the comers (I have
problems with). If it's slippery 1 put on the back break and forget to
use the front."
While watching Marley go over a couple of the jumps, his dad
simply watches with admiration and says, "he loves to jump."
Usually it is the father getting the son interested in a sport but in
this particular case, it's reversed as young Harley has brought dad to
the track and has got him interested in not only fixing the hikes but
racing.
"He's even got me talked into the crazy stuff like the 128 (type of
bike). The old ones can't do the same things," said Mike.
The old ones may not be able to jump like the bikes young Harley
will be on some day but dad gets a great deal of pleasure working on
his 250 cc orange Harley Davidson dirt bike.
Harley Davidson only made dirt bikes for four years, from 1974 to
1978 so Mike has got a real collectors item in his shop. Just as nice
as the bike are the 23 trophies which lino the walls, those are from
eight-year-old Harley.

Campbell nets winner to beat Goderich
EXETER - Determination is a
key ingredient when you want to
come -from -behind to win.
Monday afternoon the South Hu-
ron District High School seaior
girls' basketball team did just that
as they squeaked out a 25-23 win
over visiting Goderich Vikings.
With. two games remaining in
their Huron Conference schedule,
the Panthers look very confident
going into the playoffs.
Against the Vikings, South Hu-
ron trailed 23-20 with three min -
f iigh school sport s
utes left to play but the de-
termination factor kicked in and
Tara Pepper scored, was fouled and
made the free throw to tie the
game.
With just 28 ticks left on the
clock, Lisa Campbell launched a
long one to win the game. The Pan-
thers got a bit of a break as the ball
was knocked out of bounds, the re-
ferees didn't see it so they awarded

Farquhar and Gardner had three
goals each with two from Miners
and the other by Lori Richardson.
Against Central Elgin in the semis,
Miners had four with one each
from Farquhar, Gardner and Shaw-
na Rowe.
Despite being the premier team in
the province, Miners said it is sell
good to be a little nervous.
"I think it's good tobe nervous. If
we gct too confident we'll go down
hill," she said.
Last Tuesday, South Huron won
its 13th straight Huron-Pefth•Con-
ference title as they beat visiting
Mitchell 2-0 on a pair of goals by
Miners.
This game had a very shakey
opening five minutes for the hosts
as Mitchell was awarded a penalty
flick but South Huron goalie Jana
Webster managed to get her stick
up and stopped the ball from going
into the top corner.
"ft was a hard stroke and a good
save," said Workman.
The Panthers lost five starters
from last year's championship
team, four of them played de-
fensive roles but Workman is very
pleased with those who have
stepped in.
"Pres Maver is doing a wonderful
job. she never quits and Carisa
Willis has excelled."
South Huron's Danielle Miners, centre, digs for the ball
against Medway in Saturday afternoon's WOSSA final.
