on Wednesday and Thursday at the South Huron Recreation Centre. Exeter native Caleb
Kelly and friends Liene Patricio and Jen Linfield found many bargains.
User pay study expected for Lucan garbage
LUCAN - Village council will be
considering a proposed user pay
system for garbage collection. A
decision will be reserved until after
the upcoming municipal election.
Dave Wilson of Bluewater Recy-
cling was invited to last Tuesday's
meeting and reported that user pay
encourages residents to use blue
boxes more consistently and gar-
bage going to land fill sites is then
reduced considerably.
Wilson added, "In municipalities
with user pay systems in place,
everything possible goes to the blue
boxes and composter sales are up
considerably. In Exeter since the
user pay is in place, materials going
to blue boxes have increased by 95
percent."
Deputy reeve Harry Wraith, an
advocate of the user pay system is
convinced the village's landfill site
bills would be decreased enormous-
ly with a lot of the materials going
to blue boxes or compostcrs.
Composters are now on sale at
Lucan Home Hardware for pur-
chase by local residents for $20
each.
In other business, council award-
ed thc contract for renovations to
the public works building to Die-
trich Metal Products for
$14,246.36, the lowest hid submit-
ted. Works superintendent Doug
Johnston said thc original estimate
was $15,000.
A contract will he signed with
Koricina Farms for the rental of 78
acres at the sewage treatment plant
property iri Biddulph township for
a two year period at an annual fee
of $121 per acre.
A six cubic yard L65 sand hopper
with manual controls plus tailgate
latch, central lubrication and facto-
ry installation for a total 'price of
$7.193.25 including taxes will be
purchased from London Machinery
Inc.
Lucan insurance rates
to rise by 20 percent
LUCAN - Council members
learned last Tuesday night that the
insurance premiums for 1995
would be up by about 20 percent to
$28,474.
Presenting the quotation were
Bryce Sibbick of Frank Cowan
Company Limited of Princeton and
local insurance broker Don Urb-
‘ shott of Urbshott-Galloway Insu-
rance.
Sibbick said the increase was pri-
marily in liability coverage due to
enormous claims in a number of
Ontario municipalities during the
last year. He added, "This isn't a
great year for insurance liability.
The claims experience is awful and
our industry claims are also terri-
ble."
He continued, "We have complet-
ed valuation of all municipal build-
ings and hopefully have them all up
to date now and at realistic figures
on replacement value."
The Lucan Community Centre re-
placement value has increased from
$2.3 million to $4 million and
councillors felt this new figure was
realistic and acceptable.
