grocery
store to
open
Sundays
EXETER - Anyone walk-
ing on the Main Street this
past Sunday probably noticed
a bit more activity near Dar-
ling's Food Meat Market
which tried its hand for the
first time at Sunday shop-
ping.
But whether the other gro-
cers will follow Darling's
lead is still questionable.
Dave Holtzman, of Holtz -
man's IGA said he won't
make any decision until he
gets feedback from his cus-
tomers.
Tom Seip, of Seip's Valu
Mart agreed. "We won't
open unless our customers
demand it," Seip said.
Representatives from Dar-
ling's declined to comment
on the decision to open the
store on Sundays.

Making people feel safe and secure
Dashwood Lock and Key offers many options in security
EXETER - Security and personal
safety are on the minds of many
people these days as more homes
and cars are broken into. Still there
are many who people do little to
protect themselves and their homes.
"Security is a back burner issue
to some people," says Jan Barnes of
Dashwood Lock and Key.
And while some may think a
home security system is expensive
she and husband Brad, say that isn't
so. "A good home security system
is still fairly cheap," she said.
"I think more and more people are
considering such options," said
Brad who is a certified locksmith.
00 "At the first home show held in
Exeter some nine years ago lot of
people would tell me they didn't
lock the doors in their homes," said
Barnes. "Now it's hard to come by
anyone who doesn't," he said.
Dashwood Lock and Key has
been in business since 1982. It
started as a one man operation out

Vaseline was discovered in .1870 by Robert
Cheesebrough when he heard oil workers talk
of the healing properties of "rod wax", a sub-
stance that collected on oil pumping machin-
ery. The name Vaseline comes from the Ger
man word "Vasser" for water and the Greek word "elaion" for oil.
Do babies dream in the womb? Tests of fetal development dur-
ing pregnancy have detected rapid eye movements of the type
associated with dreaming sleep.
Last season, one hockey team used a hyperbaric oxygen cham-
ber to treat injured players. The player breathes high doses of ox-
ygen via a mask in the chamber containing twice the normal air
pressure. He stays in the chamber for1-1.5 hours. Injuries ap-
peared to heal twice as fast.
A century ago, pharmacists used to have bottles of leeches on
their shelves. Leeches produces a chemical called hirudin which
prevents blood clotting. This chemical is being duplicated syn-
thetically and may be used in humans in the future.

"Your Health Care Pharmacy'
of the Barnes' home and service
van. Since February of this year
they have expanded to a store in
Exeter.
"Retail customers didn't know I
sold locks, safes and security sys-
tems. It's hard to sell such items
out of a truck. People want to see
before they buy," he said of the de-
cision to open the store.
While the family operated busi-
ness has expanded considerably
into areas such as security systems
for residential and commercial use
as well as selling safes and de-
tectors, they still do the traditional
key making and repairs.
And of course, the Barnes still
have to go on calls to help people
locked out of their cars.
"No matter how many sets of key
people have, some people manage
to lock them all inside the car," he
said.
Barnes said he enjoys these calls
because it reminds him of when he
first started in the business.
"I got into locksmithing by see-
ing someone doing a repair,"
Barnes said. "I became fascinated
by it," he said.
When he started in the business,
Barnes said there was no one else
in this area operating full time. So
he decided to give it a try.
"It's changed a lot over the
years," he said. "Equipment now is
really high tech. But that's half the
fun."
