Saturday night, the Lakers were beaten 6-4 by the new and improved Exeter Hawks. The Hawks, sporting a new coach and a dozen rookies to compliment thcir 13 returnees will try to make it two straight Friday when they host the Lucan Irish at the South Huron Recreation Centre at 8:30 p.m. "They (Hawks) were pretty positive. The fact we stayed disciplined in the third period was the difference," said Revington. Exeter got a lot of mileage out of its veterans in the regular season opener as Ray Cousineau scored shorthanded and the score was tied 3-3 HAWKS HAPPENINGS Chris Lyndon .., goalie got first season win Hawks 6, Lakers 4 Exeter scoring: Cousinealt Livermore (Kennedy,Lynn) • Livermore (McCann, Gardner) Burns (Gardner) Burns (Gardner, Dalrymple) Burns (Cousineau,Farquhar) Future games: Friday- host Lucan, 8:30 p.m. Saturday - at Mt. Brydges, 8:30 p.m. after 40 minutes as second -year winger Mark Livermore connected twice. A year ago Livermore had 13 goals in his rookie season, a lot of those coming when he teamed with Nathan Burns. However, this year Rev- ington is experimenting with his line combinations early and had Bums playing with a couple of different combinations. The third period belonged entirely to the second -year centre Burns as he fired the natural hat trick including one on the powerplay. One of the duos Burns was grouped with was Cousineau and Steve Farquhar while Livermore was with veteran Sean McCann and rookie Chris Kennedy. Look for that trio to score a ton of goals this year as Bums had 27 tal- lies a year ago in his rookie campaign, McCann had 37 goals and Ken- nedy, coming over from the Wingham Junior 'C' Ironmen is also an of- fensive threat. 1994-95 EXETER HAWKS Goal - Chris Lyndon (Exeter Hawks), Darren Kints (Exeter mid- gets). Irish bow to Cents 6-3 By Fred Groves T -A staff SEAFORTH - It wasn't the way they wanted to start out. Friday night in Seaforth, the Lu - can Irish lost their 1994-95 regular season opener 6-3 to the Ccnte- naires. The Irish will look for win num- ber one tonight when they host the North Middlesex Stars tonight and have a big game in Exeter on Fri- day with the Hawks. When the puck dropped to kick off the OHA Junior Development season Friday night, the Irish burst out of the gate and the teams bat- tled to a scoreless first period. "They were real quiet between the first and second period. The ef- fort wasn't half as good as it was Wednesday in the pre -season game," said Irish co -coach Jeff Dal- rymple. Lucan had a 1-2-1 exibition record which was capped with a 5- 5 tie with Thamesford Trojans last Wednesday. Against the Centenaires, Irish rookie puckstopper Jason Glavin didn't have much help or luck in his debut. While he was beaten with a long shot from near the red line, the other five that got past him weren't entirely his fault. "The other five goals were break- downs in front of the net. I think he played solid," said Dalrymple. One of the goals was redirected off of a leg, one was a Scaforth powerplay, there was a breakaway and a couple of times the Lucan de- fenseman simply weren't clearing the man in front of the net. Second -year forward Travis Stirfthcombc.;was in the penalty box during the powcrplay goal and nearly cost another goal in thc third period when again sitting in the sin bin, the Cents hit the post. How will the Irish deal with those who continue to take un- necessary penalties like those by Stinchcombe of which two were roughing aftcr the whistle? "Stay out of the box or you'll sit on the bench," simply put by Dal- rymple. Trailing 5-2 after 40 minutes, the Irish got a great effort out of over - J994 -95 Lucan Irish Goal - Jason Glavin (Stephen bantams); Rob Hoison (Stratford Jr. B). "He wants to play. He's going to play if he feels okay," said Dal- rymple of DePrest who has been the club's leading scorer the fast couple of years. In thc season opener, he had two goals and assisted on Steve Mat- thews goal. DePrest's first tally was a very quick shot past Scaforth goalie Tim Swan and the- other he went to the net and slipped the puck between Swan's legs. Friday's game was fairly quiet in the first period for referee Paul Pe- trie but things got a little ugly later on. There were no fights but Petrie enforced the roughing after thc whistle. Scalbrth% Steve Mclnally was on the receiving end of a unnoticed spear by Lucan's Will Giles and late in the game Mclnally was giv- en a five-minute high sticking pen- alty which also saw a Seaforth trainer ejected. "Wc have two veteran lines up front. Our goaltending will be a strength," said Dalrymple of Glavin and Rob -Hotson who played Junior 'B' in Stratford a ycar ago. "Kennedy had a solid game and so did Sean McCann," said Reving- ton. "I changed the lines in the third and shortened the bencb near the end." Revington said the Lakers got a little frustrated in the final 20 minutes which resulted in the visitors enjoying a few powerplays. A year ago, Pt. Stanley, who were first in the east division but have returned to the west side, had three players with over 100 minutes in penalty. It appears as though Lakers coach Many Carroll will continue to have a physical team. In a pre -season game with the Irish, the Lakers and Lu - can only had 11 skaters left come the third period. "It was rough enough. They (Lakers) got stupid at the end while we were fairly disciplined," said Revington. Both teams fired about 40 shots at the perspective cages but when the final horn went, it was Exeter's Chris Lyndon picking up his fust win of the year. "We had them 6-3 then they pulled their goalie and scored one very late," said Revington. Lyndon has a bit of good luck on his side as he started the first game last season against the North Middlesex Stars and returned home from Parkhill with a shutout. woold%. 4011%.0 Otes":591"Cl.
