No hunting
zones planned
PETERBOROUGH - Ontario's
Natural Resources Minister Ho-
ward Hampton has announced that
he plans widespread hunting and
motorized access hans on more
than 166,(X)() acres of public land
spread across the province. break-
ing his word to the Ontario Federa-
tion of Anglers and Hunters
(OFAU). .
In February, al the OFAH Annual
Conference in Windsor, Hampton
said the 17 "keep it Wild" spaces
announced last week would not in-
clude the wide ranging hans. He
made a similar comment on the
OFAH weekly TV show "The An-
gier & Hunter".
Hampton told an audience of 350
al the conference, "We are not pro-
posing in every one of the sites to
eliminate hunting or to eliminate
the use of boats and motors. There
may be a couple though."
But the subsequent formal an-
nouncement makes it clear that the
province intends otherwise, says
the OFAH: more than 90 percent is
pegged for "no -hunting" zones. In
addition, motorized access and
small boat motors essential for fish-
ing and access will be banned in
the same areas.
"A 60 -day public consultation pe-
riod will be conducted in each of
the 17 areas, plus Toronto. But
we're doubtful that the minister
will he listening." said OFAH Pres-
ident Terry Smellier. "Hampton
has already stated what his plans
arc. I would love to be wrong, but
1'11 het he doesn't make any sub-
stantial changes based on puhlic in-
put."
"What we were promised just
weeks ago wouldn't happen, has
happened," said Rick Morgan.
OFAH executive vice president.
"If these areas arc so beautiful
and valuable that they deserve spe-
cial status, and if hunting and fish-
ing have occurred there for genera-
tions, hunting and fishing
obviously have had no negative im-
pact," Morgan said. "Why suddenly
ban them? The minister has not
only gone hack on his word, the
hans ori hunting and access don't
make any sense."
Morgan pointed out that the ban.
in many places, will stop genera-
tions -old hunting and fishing tradi-
tions. passed from family to fancily.
"What Mr. Hampton proposes is
to chip away at a cornerstone of our
natural heritage." said Morgan. "1
think he'll find that thousands of
people simply won't accept this.
Why should they? 11 doesn't make
sense on any level."
Hampton has told the OFAH that
more of these "Kccp it Wild" spac-
es will be created in the near future.
