Last Wednesday afternoon in their Huron Conference regular sea- son debut, all three Panthers teams poured in a parcel of baskets, sweeping the visiting Central Hu- ron Redmen from Clinton in the midget, junior and senior games. The midgets had a large crowd watching as they jumped into a 20- 0 lead and easily beat the Redmen 83-17. The juniors came -from - behind to win 35-27 and the seniors took their third straight, a big 58-39 win. South Huron's seniors, winners of three of their first four games, held a slim 24-20 lead at the half but with the help of a strong bench, led by guard Kerri-Lynn Case were up 40-26 late in the third quarter. "We played pretty well, we put a couple of new things in," said Pan- thers' senior coach Terry O'Rourke. "It was a good team effort." Leading the South Huron offence was centre Tara Pcpper who netted 16 points, 14 of those in the second half. After four games, she leads the team in scoring with an 11.25 points -per -game average. Karey Youmans and Case each had nine points with six from Chrissy McInnes for a well- balanced attack. "We're spreading it (scoring) around," said O'Rourke. "Tara had a good game, she was in good posi- tion to score." In the opening quarter, Pepper started the game's scoring off when she stole the ball and went down the court and then took a pass from Youmans to put the Panthers on the board. With two minutes left in the first quarter, Heather Davies had steal, went down and although missed the shot, Case was there to toss in the rebound. O'Rourke said he was not only pleased with the game Casc had, but the othcrs who came off the bench played well. "We have a starting five, but we have 10 we try to keep even," he said of court time. It was thc second time the seniors beat the Redmen, the other coming four days earlier at the South Huron tournament.. They've also beaten the Mustangs from F.E. Madill (Wingham) which leaves Seaforth and Goderich left to face in the Hu- ron Conference. "Our goal is to beat Clinton, Wingham and Seaforth and see what happens with Godcrich," said O'Rourke. The seniors have a bit of a breath- er from competition before trav- elling to London for thc Beal In- vitational and arc in Godcrich to face the Vikings on October 3. Come -from -behind In the junior game, the Panthers were down 16-12 at the half as they couldn't stop the visitors from driv- ing to the hoop. South Huron didn't really come to life until late in the third quarter whcn Sara Szabo drove to the bas- ket twicc untouched and then Meg- an Ratz did the same to finally give the hosts thc Icad. Jayne Ballantyne gave the Pan- thers a comfortable 10 -point mar- gin when she.. went to the hoop, made it and added the free throw. Kate Skinner led the juniors with cight points while Szabo, Ratz and Julie Rooseboom all had six each. Big, big win Look for thc midget Panthers to be a scoring machine this fall as they started off by beating the Red - men by 66 points. This one was over from thc be- ginning as South Huron had a 20-0 lead in the first quarter beforc the visitors could get on the board. Although the hosts attempted to ease up a bit, they led 45-8 at half- time. Missy Hayter had 21 points fon thc winners, Sue Inlakahana not only passed very well but netted 16 points and Keriann O'Rourke had 18. South Huron girls' basketball teams started off the season with three big wins last Wednesday. At left; senior guard Jen Rompf, right; guards a Central Huron opponent.
