On Sunday, October 2, you'll have a perfect chance to see nature's fashion show at the Bannockburn Fall Hike. At the Bannockburn Wildlife Area from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., the Ausable-Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA) will have staff at points of interest along the na- ture trails to give you insight into what makes Bannockburn so spe- cial and how you can do similar things on your own property. When you finish your hike you'll be treated to hot or cold apple ci- der. Hikers are asked to bring their own mugs to make it a litterless event. "Last year , over 300 people at- tended the hike, included a few youth groups. The rolling and tree - covered terrain allows a lot of peo- ple to he along the nature trails without it being congested," said Kate Monk of the ABCA. Bannockburn Wildlife Area is a 60 -acre parcel of land in Stanley Township. Since the Authority bought the land in 1973, they have been improving the land for a wide variety of wildlife. Some improve- ments happened on their own as the abandoned farm fields returned to nature. The property has be- come a place of natural and recrea- tional interest for arca residents. Boardwalks, stairs and bridges make the hiking a little easier and protect the delicate environment. The Bannockburn Wildlife arca is located two kilometres north of Huron County Road #3, between Varna and Bruccfreld in Stanley Township. Call the ABCA at 235- 2610 for further information. Capsule Comments with Ernie Miatello Prior to 1911, the only way for doctors to investi- gate stomach problems was to open the patient up. Then along came Dr. William Hill, a London physi- cian, who designed the first gastroscope, a tube in- serted into the stomach through the mouth. Today's gastroscope uses fibre -optics. A new technique to open blocked cardiac arteries is the "stented graft" whereby a hollow tube is implanted in the middle of the blockage to al- low blood to flow through. The tube is put in place by a catheter that is threaded through an artery in the thigh, up to the blocked area. It shows a lot of promise as an alternative to open heart surgery. If your doctor's prescription requires a dose of 1/2 tablet, it is some- times difficult to split the tablets evenly. If it crumbles, it's best to throw out the crumbs and start again. We have pill -splitters which will split that pill in half easily or we will do it for you. The human body reaches physiological maturity at age 25? After that, the heart's pumping ability drops by 1% per year after age 30. Blood vessels are 30% narrower by middle age. Muscle fibres decline In num- ber umber by 3-5% each decade and muscle strength has reduced by 10-30% by age 60. Depressing, but regular exercise can slow down the aging process.
